Deep Transmission Pan

For those running a deep transmission pan? What one did you use and how much of a clearance issue is there when driving (stock height)? I've seen the derale and TCI. Are those really the two best options?

Wondering if it's more of a headache to worry about a larger pan, albeit I realize they are only a couple of inches thicker. Mine is pretty beat up for some reason so looking for options for replacement. Do they make a sturdier, thicker, aluminum pan that is stock style/size?

Thanks

As far as I know, there isn't a deep filter to go with the deep pan for a 4L60. The old deralie with the tubes in it, the stock-depth filter was held up into the pump because it sat on top of the tubes. So the filter pick-up was still at the stock height. What's the gain?

This has come up in the past, and I have researched it. I have pics in my files, but I'm not going to search for them right now. There is a stock GM deep pan that was used on Tahoes, Suburbans, etc. But it was on the 4L60e, which has a larger diameter hole in the pump for the filter. The stock deep-pan filter won't fit into the pump on a SyTy trans.

If the original is beat up, just replace it with another stocker. Walk into any transmission shop and ask for one. They'll probably give you one. Save yourself the aggrivation of trying to figure out the filter compatibility thing. Others have figured it out years ago. There is no deep filter for the non-electronic transmission with a deep pan.

All my posts get no responses, so here I go contributing once again.

I do run the TCI 378000. I can not believe how much they are now. Aside from that, the unit is very sturdy. The cast is very Thick. The bottom of the pan has somewhat of a cooling fin design. It does hang down, but it does not pertrude past the crossmember- which is the lowest point.

If your really just trying to get a stock one one- try to source a AC Delco brand unit. Looking at my 30 some year old original pan, it doesn't have a spec of rust on it. I'm assuming it's a factory coating. Today it's like rolling the dice with any type of parts.

The inside of the cast pan has " cleats" that jock up the filter and keep it in place/suspended. I have like 4 different filters here- stock, one provided by a performance trans builder, a TCI 30% more flowing race-y one and some overseas one. The best ones are " made in USA"

no deep pans for me ... filter needs to be on the botttom of the pan
Why? The closer the filter is to the bottom of the pan, the more likely it's going to suck up the dirt, that settles to the bottom of the pan. Since the filter is submerged just as far below top of the oil, as the filter in a standard depth pan, there is no disadvantages to use the deeper pan, only advantages.

Do you run the oil pump pickup tube in your engine oil pan high up off the bottom of the pan so it does not pick up dirt too?

GM made a deep pan for the later model trucks/ subs 4l60e ......#24215535-deep pan with drain plug , they also made a deep filter for it...#24208576

maybe they know something.

Go tell the guy rebuilding your trans that you want the filter to sit up off the bottom of the pan a few inches, and that you still want him to warranty the trans/work.

B&M makes an extension for the filter to sit at the right depth..... why?

What holds the filter in the pump?

Is this your bush?
Got a +2-3 qt Derale pan on my Rebuilt upgrade performance Transmission. Great addition. Had a temp sensor bung which i use and it with the RPM braided lines and larger subcooler barely gets into the 160s beating and boost launching it. VS. OLD STOCK Trans that would get easily into 200s doing the same type of activity.

Here's a photo of my TCI pan I dug through my files to somewhat clear this up.

This pan was actually in fact NO GOOD. Where the DOT and circle is ..is where the casting was porous.. something TCI claims they never had. I had to photo document this for a warranty . Anyway if you look closely there are 4 " cone shape" pertrusions. Those would be the things I referred to as "cleats"- to keep the filter snugged up in place. ( Sounds pretty much like the same concept adapted from derale- except there flow through/pass through tubes are keeping the filter "up" , off the bottom same approach as the TCI.

It's your truck do as you please. I kept my original pan it the event that something were to happen ( which it did )
