Dirt bike kills Sy...

Robert Lone

MUTANT
I got jabberwalk's Sy from a roll (weak-sauce on my part) at about 10 mph and absolutely spanked him according to Jason (jabberwalk) up to about 70 mph. I was watchin' da road. :D

Honda XR650R was the culprit.

BTW, big thanks go out to Jason for helping me get the heart back in the MUTANT.

My RM250 would likely take my sy too. Power to weight ratio.......

Yep, dirt bikes rip. We have a KX500 with some mild porting and a little cylinder head milling. Made 78rwhp and it's an absolute rocketship. With all of the desert gear on it, weight is about 240lbs. Someone tested a stock CR500 back in the day in the 1/4 mile with just a pipe and jetting. Those make a little less power than the KX. It ran like 11.40s at 118mph. It ran out of gear at about 800ft

He actually mentioned that... :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

That is too funny… I am surprised Jason still brings up the fact that he loves them so much in public. Especially after my wife made such fun of the girlie drink he kept talking about at Homecoming. :rotf:

Stock CR500 is not doing 118, no way

It was in Cycle World back in the mid 90s. But yes you are right, it wasn't stock. I did mention pipe and jetting, but I actually know the owner and he is revalving my shock on my bike right now. I asked him what was up and he said it's still stock bore but with significant porting, upgraded coil and a 40mm carburetor up from the stock 38. He said he never had it dynoed but it doesn't have stock gearing because it's setup as a supermotard. It ran 11mph faster than it did stock on the same straightaway. He has had it radared at 128mph with pictures showing the radar when they did it. It's a fast bike! I've raced desert all my life so I know how fast these bikes are stock. I'm sure a stock CR won't do much more than 90mph gearing limited.

Yeah that was a GREAT time, gotta initiate the FNG's right :p??? I still get a chuckle thinking about the "terminator" outfit that she keeps at work so that the folks she has to can don't "get the wrong idea"

I have a "stock" 2000 model CR500 and have GPS'd it @ 103 in the dirt. Loose-ish red clay w/ slippage at the rear wheel. Gearing was 15/45.

Mods:

Vertex piston
Boyson reeds
PC Platnum pipe
Henson clutch disks

All mods were made because they were much cheaper than factory parts...

BTW, w/ 13/48 gears (woods riding), mine ran a 7.91s @ 92.??mph in the 1/8 when it was stock other than the countershaft sprocket. My 60 ft was 2.4 sec (I was skeered :rotf: ) and I ran outta gear around 550 ft.

Bottom line, 500cc 2 stroke singles are monsters....

....all doubters should ride one.

Amen! Our KX500 was GPSd at 115 on El Mirage dry lake bed with 14/42 which equates to what you have on your CR. We had some mild head work done though so it had a little more on top. 500cc 2 strokes are SCARY fast!

Again, I say ALL doubters have to ride one before they hate....

Damn, I didn't know 500s were that fast. I like a 250 better, just more nibble for the riding we do.

Oh yeah, 250s are great. I've raced mine a couple of times in random desert GPs. The 500s are definitely a handful in the turns because of the old school frame and the rotating mass of that big piston. But, they are stupid fast and fun nonetheless. They both have their place.

The 5's are mind numbing in the least.

I would lay awake at night for the first 6 months after I bought mine asking, "Why did I buy this monster?"

BTW, I've been riding big stuff since I was 4....
