I have mine on.I always think it's there for a reason, but if others don't have it, not sure on what harm it will do with out it.

Well I think its there to help when pulling the engine out, and I thought a bolt goes through it to the back of the alt. But the Powermaster alt doesn't use that back bolt, hence not needing the bracket.

that bracket can be a bitch to get back on properly. I probably won't put it back on myself

Wow! Funny! I just had a heck of a time fitting mine back into place tonight. I changed my P/S pump, and a previous owner didnt put it back on right, so I did the dirty work!

That bracket is there for a reason. It main job is a support brace for the main bracket that the power steering pump and the Alt bolt to. I had to replace two of the main bracket before I reinstall that brace back on. If you are looking at the front of the main bracket. On both of the brackets that I had to replace, they broke after a crack develop on what would be the centerline of the two pulleys looking down from 12pm to 6pm. I not sure but I think it was the amount tension that the tensioner puts on the belt that cause it to break the bracket. I was lucky that I started hearing a funny noise and was tracing it down when I found the broken main bracket in the driveway and not on the road.

I took mine off too when I had the manifolds off for the Vortec head/cam swap. Now you got me thinking maybe it was a mistake. SY2455 how hard are spare power steering/alt brackets to come by?

must be you cause i put 40k on a truck after i took it off

Look at it this way, my Syclone has 90,000 on it with the stock bracket and brace. My other one had 310,000 mile on it getting the same gas mileage, and compression as the day that I did a swap. 22.5mpg and 160lb in 4 cyl and 155lb in the other two. 65lb of oil pressure hot driving and 20 lb hot at idle. This was the engine that had 3 sets of brackets on it. Looking at it that way, I don't think it was me.:rotf:

Right now you can find them all the time at the local pick-a-part auto wrecking yard. In another 5 years they may be harder to come by.

Re: Do I have to run this bracket?

Just my :2cents:

I figure all brackets are there for a reason. Support and vibration being the obvious. The factory doesn't do these things willy-nilly, they cost $$. Being somewhat anal about such things after to many years running big trucks where things seem to fall off regardless, I'd install the thing.

Re: Do I have to run this bracket?

If they do it because of cost, why did they put the stupid powersteering cooler on the TY's? Like I was told in this post, it might because of pulling the motor eaiser if it was under warranty. Just my .02..

Re: Do I have to run this bracket?

mine's been gone for a long time and mine's daily driven with haft the alt bracket hacked away so I could do away with the ac bracket completely :)

any alt brackets that I have seen that cracked or broke were mainly due to the fact that the owener had attached a tie down turn buckle or torque strap of some kind to help prevent engine movement.
