Doc Hoover in the 9s???

my dad and i had a lot of fun in KC this year! our truck ran good except for the "ice patch" the first 60 ft! we think it should have been in the 9s, but too much wheel spin! if you look at the 60ft times that our truck ran b4 we came to KC and compare them to the ones at KC you'll see why we believe. we want to be the 1st legitimate AWD syclone to run in the 9s.we definately believe our truck will do it but we want to hear what all yall think!

I think for sure there is enough motor to do it.

Just a matter of getting it to the ground. I could see the truck dance almost all the way down the track.

with a 10.16, you are knocking on the door for sure.

I just wonder what some good suspension mods, or different tires would do for you. Of course if it hooked, the drivetrain will take a bigger beating.

I know you have the PEP kit on front, I hear the canadian guy had a secret to help, maybe he can give us some insight.

Glad to see you on the board also, after seeing you and truck at the nats for past 4+ years.

Hey Matt, what were typical 60' times the truck was getting before KC Vs. at KC?

Matt, first of all, I'm glad you guys made it to Nats, it's always fun watchin your truck run and exchanging street racing stories. Anyway, bring that truck up here and it'll go 9's. You can go to the track with Mark Larson and I in the fall at Tri-State Raceway in Iowa. It's a fast track and we usually go every year in Sept-Oct when the air is AWESOME! And this track hooks, I mean really hooks. Lots of records broken at this track in the fall. I know it's a long trek, but your truck would haul some serious ass in our cold weather(as if it doesn't haul ass now). Hhmmmm, 1st AWD syclone in the 9.7's or 9.8's, sweet!

Ditto on above..

About the suspension mod... not sure exactly how it works but basically it'l only let ur front raise up so far. Kinda like the ama supercross/outdoors dirtbikes do with their folks. Hold them lower on the start.

NOlan?

I *believe* the truck was set up (before the PEP front kit install) so that on heavy acceleration, the front would lift and the rear would settle, promoting weight transfer from front to back. This is kinda like you might do for 2WD vehicles - the added weight on the rear improves traction. Of course, weight is being taken off the front which lessens traction there. Dennis ran the horsepower and et numbers Hoover gave him through some drag race computer simulator (which has the S10 in it's database) - the truck was not as fast as it should given the engine output. I believe that this is due to the wasting of the power the transfer case is sending to the front wheel (assuming stock front diff internals - wheels if theres a locker or such) during the run because the front was not getting any bite at all until the weight transfer subsided partway down the track.

The PEP front kit is designed to, among other things, minimize lifting of the front end under heavy acceleration. This is *usually* a good thing for AWD vehicles. However, if the rear suspension is still configured to settle on acceleration, what you'll get is less weight transfer to the rear (because the front doesn't lift) decreasing rear traction but *somewhat* increased traction in the front - which I believe is why Hoover suddenly found himself in the position of having two front wheels on the ground needing mucho steering input while the rears (now with less traction due to less weight transfer from the front) were spinning like crazy.

Ideally, what needs to be done is to install a rear adjustable 4 link suspension. With this setup, you can optimize the suspension for drag racing. Properly adjusted, the torque between the driveshaft and rear diff (a force trying to twist the rear diff) is "transferred" - it's like a jacking force between the rear axle and frame - it pushes down on the rear wheels (increasing traction) *AND* lifts the rear of the truck, transferring weight to the front - also increasing traction. Fine tuning at the track will allow for equal traction at the three (or 4 with locker) drive wheels and can even compensate for torque steer. This will allow all of the engines output to be effectively channeled to the ground. Wheelspin will be minimized and steering much more controllable.

The other options are to change the front spring rates and shock valving to get back the front end lifting (but this will continue to promote wasting of the power applied to the front wheel(s)), to keep the PEP front setup as is and try different rear shock/spring rates to optimize fornt and rear traction as much as possible, and/or to go with stickier tires.

thanks guys for the replies and advice. dad is currently figuring out what he thinks we need to do. we will try to video the 1st 9 sec pass and somehow put it on this website. if anyone know how to do that, im all ears! we're comp illiterate!

kurt, we made 3 passes at the memphis motorsports park just b4 we came to KC. the ETs were 10.27 10.21 and 10.19. the 60 fts are in order coordinating with the times: 1.53 1.51 and 1.54. so if we can get it to leave just a little harder, we'll be in the money!

Joe, Joe, Joe..... i want your ty dude! when you sell it i better be the 1st person you call! thanks for entertaining all of us sat! i wish you could video that 9 sec pass too!!!!!!!!

Mark, you and Mark get the viper boys ready! :2gunfire: the iowa event would be awsome! keep in contact with us about those events and maybe we can schedule a free weekend! thanks for all the cool stories!

thanks again for the help zach jeff and sandman! we're going to figure it out! all this extra info is great! keep it coming!

Hey Matt

It was nice meeting you at nats, you and your crew are top notch, love watching your truck, mainly because it shows every year and runs considerably faster than the rest of us.

As far as the Tri State deal, I really hope you guys can come on up, It'll be Mark C (low12's), Dig (high 11's), Anthony's ty (high 10s), Brett (low 11's), and Myself (low 11's) and you guys in the (9's). A syty showing like none other.

Keep in touch.

Matt,

I trust that you received the tape that I sent you by now... Hope that you were able to gain some useful information from the footage. It was great seeing you guys again! I was disappointed when I went to my first NATS in '01 and didn't get to see you run. I bought all the NATS videos from Bill Mercer and was looking forward to seeing the syclone that ran 10's, all day.

I have your 10.16 pass from this years NATS on page four of my gallery here: http://huryde.station180.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=mikecampbellakaSY2932 . I hope that you are the first AWD syclone in the 9's!

Glad to hear that the footage was worth while for you guys! Well, it seems the video of your pass at this years NATS was axed by the administrator of my gallery. I don't "own" the bandwidth and he has to "clean house" from time to time to free up some space... I am going to set up my own account soon so that I will more control over my content. At that point, I will upload your pass again and give you the link to it for your viewing pleasure :D .

So if some one is wanting to be first they need to hurry.

These must be the secret trucks that were going to be at nationals. I remember reading all about them. This year I seen 1-10 second truck, 2-11 second trucks, and a few 12 second trucks.

There are 4 trucks that are pushing 9's

Who? Hoover and Les are the only two. But like Mark Larson said, everyone says how they're building a truck that does this or that or how they're gonna be the first to run whatever. But lets look at who actually runs the numbers, hoover and les, thats it.

Like Mark said, lets take a look at Nats. The winner of super stock ran 12.7? Stock turbo winner went 13.0? And with the exception of Mark breaking, Al was running low 12's in Mod class? I know we had small turnout this year, but there are many low 12 sec stuck turbo trucks. Many trucks that would qualify for "super stock" that are well into the 11's. And Mod class trucks right on the edge of running 10's. So where are they all? Same with the 9sec trucks. Who shows up and runs the numbers, Hoover. Les has done the same. Show up to an event, run the numbers, and go home.

Hey Matt, tell your dad he owes me an ice cream sandwich when you guys break into the 9's! He'll remember me when you tell him that. You guys are just a good day at a sticky track away from the 9's

Hoover, Young are the two that are well known. There are two others as well I wish I could be one but I have toooo many other projects going that are going to be or "are" a lot faster than these little trucks are ever going to be. I have a problem of not having enough time but having the money. Im sending mine off to the chassis shop in another month or so to get the 4 link and front end work done. Mine should be hi 9 capable but I wont be the first.

I believe Jerry knows the other trucks pretty well. I think he's done the motors. Then again some poeple just dont like posting what they run. But flame it or not, they're others out there.

Big AL, when our truck runs a 9 sec pass my dad is going to send you an ice cream sandwich the size of our intercooler with your name right in the center of it! thanks for your support at the nationals!

well mr pittman, i hope you are right about the 4 trucks! my dad and i want to see these trucks run! why is it that we all hear about these trucks but we never see one? not even a video! im not tryin to be an ass bc i want to see them too! if we get beat, more power to em! we are not going to be mad! that just modivates us to make our truck faster! i dont know what you meant about something "being a lot faster than these little trucks are ever going to be" but i do know that if your talking about a syclone the only way you can make a syclone run A LOT BETTER than our 10.16 is to convert it to two wheel drive. and that means its not a syclone any more! a true syclone is AWD not two wheel drive. our motor in a two wheel drive chassis whatever, runs in the 8s! that for sure! but its AWD and we enjoy it that way! the challenge is to make an AWD syclone run 9.999 or better. it would be easy to make a two wheel drive truck run that fast! 2 axels, 1 rear end, two tires, weight transfer,.......the list could go on and on! compare that to 4 axels 2 driveshafts front differential and rear, 4 tires and a transfer case, anybody can do the math!

there should be a pro-class at next years nationals for 2WD pro trucks and AWD pro trucks! we have been sayin this for the last 4 years! but the nationals crew doesnt seem to want to do that and thats fine! run what u brung! not taking anything from jerry mccoy bc all his trucks run good and hes even beatin us a couple of times, GO JERRY, but my dad and i, along with both marks, are talking about a true syclone, AWD.

Mark and mark, i agree with both of you run the numbers and go home!

tab pittman has as well as the syclone a killer buick gn with probably about 1000 horsepower that should run high 8's low 9's. his syclone has all the stuff to be a mid 10 truck. we don't want to make him mad or he'll take one of the jet motors off his plane and put it in a car and then run NO wheel drive. He's also a really good guy.

Thanks Les

Actualy we are gunning for the mi/hi 8's in the buick. We have a nova that will be a turbocharged 400ci small block. right now the nova is a roller and the buick is getting the engine dropped in it. (street legal FULL ACC !)

Yeah, Im aiming for 9's in the syclone even if I have to do the blue bottle intercooler. I dont give a damn how I get there, the number says is all. I honestly do not have any time right now and cant mess with it. Im going out east every 4-6 weeks just to check on the buick.

>Im wasnt trying to be a jerk<, I hope one of you guys grabs a hi 9. I doubt there is much more in an AWD SY than a 9.70 or so. I know damn well Les has the HP to make 9.9X happen I think he has the highest trap speed around. He may be a little modest (very) on the net here but I know what he runs. I also know he's not pushing it "real" hard. As far as the other two go. Well, just need to wait and see. Maybe we need a "sy spy satelite" in a geo sync orbit watching Pikeville KY. Seems like there are some fast sy's with that address somewhere in thier history.

Les: I think we'll be adding a ty to the family.....
