Does this sound shady?

I may have a bad viscous coupler and thought I had two laying around in the garage. As it turns out, I foolishly gave them away to a couple friends and forgot about it being the generous person I am. So it obviously brought me to call around to find one. I talked to the dealer, $1100 is the best I can find for it. Then I started calling transmissions shops, I talked to a guy who said I'ld never find a good used one and to call this guy who fixes them. I call him up and he said that since they are sealed they cant be fixed but that he could get me a brand new one for $315. Does that sound like it would be doable even for a trans shop?

remember dealer pricing is insane. 2100 dollar driveshaft ring a bell?

Seems to me these folks were selling a kit with the coupler for a descent price. I've not had any dealings with them.

That kit is for the NVG AWD case but they CAN get the 4472 viscous pretty cheap.

Damn I just talked to another place in Denver that quoted me $295 for a brand new one.

Do you suppose these viscous people are selling at these prices are of any lesser quality?

Nope. Only one place makes them.
Here's a website.

Click on the "open case" button and you can keep opening it up so you can see how it works.

As the fluid inside heats up, it can get to full "hump". Once you are at full hump, its fully locked. You keep heating it up and it will pop the casing as it is sealed with viscous fluid and a small air pocket for expansion. In some cases, it gets overheated and the plates weld together. Some cases, the coupler will pop. Jeremy Duncan has a pic on JSMan gallery of a popped viscous.
