done some minor stuff, and got a question

These trucks are cursed
doin a lil work on the truck past couple days... went through and checked every possible vacuum line and replaced all my check valves, installed KB cold air kit (sy 2882 thanks for the filter! ) and checked the timing.

truck runs better than it ever has! but im a lil concerned about one thing. my timing is advanced 6 degrees  should i leave it? considering my knock is at an all time low of about 3 with an occaisional split second spike to 8. im just a lil worried about detonation issues and the life of my engine (yes i checked the timing with the brown wire disconnected) if i remember reading correctly the ultimate is set up to run on 93, so i would think leaving the timing advanced would kinda help since i can only use 91?

i took it out on another quick datamaster run with my ultimate set at T1-20 on 91oct :-? and i got quite a bit of knock, which is expected with the shitty fuel. but still got a good performance. im gonna toss in some race fuel and hit up the track, and hopefully come back with some improved times.

concidering the lack of octane in your area.. i'd shoot to get it closer to 0.
Concider doing a TDC check as well.

Why do people even care what the ballancer says??!?!?
or even TDC for that matter?

Shouldn't you set base timing so that you are a hint below detonation on the gas you run most common?

I would want every last ounce of power out of my mill.

I have personally given up at looking at the ballancer or TDC measurements and all of that in lieu of timing around detonation.

I mean, it's a good reference point if you don't have your truck's ducks (no pun intended) in a row.

But once you have "Spring Cleaned" your truck, why bother with it really?
Shouldn't we be setting timing just under knock maybe seeing 1degree once in a while?

That would tell me we would be riding right on the edge of performance, correct?

No attacks meant at all, just some thought...
I hear about this locally quite a bit and posting sometimes...

After hartman and I screwed around with my Sy with detonation issues for a few months it just started making more sense...

Neal, get the SMC kit. It's the best thing you could do for your engine with that 91 octane crap. My KR went WAY down (under 3 degrees on 91) when I started using alky. The denatured alky/water mix is damn cost-effective too. Let me know if you have any questions about it.
