Engine not turning over

I imagine this another purple wire thread and I searched a little before hand but everyone else just seemed to have problems with hot starts and their trucks would click my truck did nothing when the key was turned no clicks. Is this the purple wire deal or something else?
Also does anyone know where i can find this writed up it was referenced a lot in old post but the link does not work. http://www.syty.huryde.com/html/Tech/starter.htm

I would pull the starter and seeing if the purple wire is getting power when you turn the key on. If it isn't getting the ignition switch on the lower column is bad (or wiring issue). If it is getting power the starter is bad or something is preventing the motor from turning over.

Ted, do you have a little more background info on what's happening? Was the truck working before, and all of a sudden crapped out, or is this a 'first time' start after doing a lot of work, and it just won't crank? Do all of the other electrical things work? (reason I ask is a week or so back, we had a member's truck just straight up die, and it ended up being connection at the battery). Jot down the scenario and we'll walk you through it.

ok truck had been running fine before. the day before i went in to start the truck i turned the key and it did nothing, i turned the key again and then it fired up. Now yesterday I took it to the track took a couple runs let it cool down for an hour or 2 then went to start it and nothing it wouldn't even click. battery was putting out 12 volts. I jumped the starter solenoid and the starter just spung it didn't crank the engine around but after i spung the starter like that i went in and turned the key and it fired right up and sense then i have fired it right up the past 3 times i have tried. I did notice the heat wrap that i have around the purple wire has made contact with the exhaust had has melted a lil in that spot but i couldn''t tell if it got to the wire or not. If it did burn through the wire could it just be a matter of replacing the purple wire?

Sounds like it's probably a starter bendix issue.

Edit just reread your issue. It's probably your starter solenoid. Try taking a hammer or a piece of pipe & banging on the solenoid. That will probably help.

make sure the shifters in park , then check for power getting to purple wire when key turned . if power is getting to purple wire . i'd say starter solenoid is bad

its not the purple wire. i just fixed this. put a heat shield on your starter and this will stop.

yes...sometimes if they are on the verge of crapping out, giving it a tap with a hammer or something will make the spotty connection work again. I had to do the same thing on my brother in laws silverado the other day.....a couple swift whacks with a hammer got it to at least turn over so he could get the truck to where he could work on it instead of a grocery store parking lot.

Yes I'm serious. It's the oldest trick in the book for GM starters with the attached solenoid. If it's spinning when you jump it, but the bendix isn't extending to engage the flywheel, that tells me that your solenoid isn't pulling the plunger in to extend the starter gear out.

Nevermind went up to Triple A today to sign up for their plus plan so i could get some tows and stuff incase the typhoon ever acted up again and low and behold it won't start in the parking lot of triple A. I just left it there had a friend pick me up and i will go back and try to start it later it may just be the heat bc today is like 100* outside. But if it is dead i got the tow thing now.

Nevermind went up to Triple A today to sign up for their plus plan so i could get some tows and stuff incase the typhoon ever acted up again and low and behold it won't start in the parking lot of triple A. I just left it there had a friend pick me up and i will go back and try to start it later it may just be the heat bc today is like 100* outside. But if it is dead i got the tow thing now.

your starter is getting too hot when you drive it a certain distance. you will be able to come back later when its cooled (15-45 min) and the truck will start. a heat shield will fix this. i had this problem for over 2 months (it was acting up with a new starter and wires to the starter) and finally put a heat shield on it 3 weeks ago, never had a problem since.

Yeah went back to after like 6 hours had plenty of time to cool and it didn't want to start or click but tapping it with a screw driver while my buddy flipped the ignition worked. So i am presuming a new starter is the fix and throughly check all the wires.

if you find a rebuildshop they can put a new soleniod on it. this is really nice if you have an aftermarket like mine. to replace it was 150 but the soleniod was only 30.

do your self the favor of buying the gear reduction / mini starter listed for the 96 3/4 ton p.u. with 454 .

Starter threads are always interesting. Technically, our starters don't have a "Bendix." We have a shift solenoid and a so-called over running clutch. A true Bendix is used when there is no solenoid to shift the starter into gear. Bendix drives were used by Ford and others a gazillion times. Here's a picture of a Bendix drive:

If it doesn't have the weird spring wrapped around the drive it's not a Bendix.

heatshield it after u drop in a new starter. also would help if you heatshield your wires.
