Engine troubles... maybe i'm just lost

Hi all,

Here is the sequence of events on my ty, the symptoms and the remedies...

Problem: Overboost
- Add the missing TPS sensor
Problem: Overboost
- Turn down boost 3 more psi
Problem: Upper radiator hose goes
- Replace upper radiator hose, low on coolant first 20 miles, refill
Problem: Engine running rough, no oil on dipstick
- immediately change oil with Mobil 1
Problem: Turbo making weird sounds, trouble spooling, engine running hot, oil smoke coming out of dipstick tube when i check oil.

Now this motor has 2500 miles on a new build, I babied it for well over 1000 miles, and now i'm trying to start tuning it. Currently the boost is set at 11psi and it feels like it has trouble making it there and overall the motor feels weak. Only blowing smoke on startup but never while i'm driving. Any Ideas on the blowing smoke from dipstick and running "underpowered".... Should i turn the boost back up a couple psi?

My ass. Look at it.
Re: Engine troubles... maybe i'm just lost

Do not turn up the boost or even drive under boost until you've fixed the problem. Sure you dont have an ignition wire crossed? Checked timing? Compression?

Re: Engine troubles... maybe i'm just lost

i dont believe i have an ignition wire crossed... I also do not have the equipment to check compression or timing... I guess i'll have to make a friend

until today the truck has been running very good

Problem also is I've never really ridden in a sy/ty other than mine so i have no idea what stock power should be, I can only compare to what it has been in the past...

Eric, the motor doesnt have 2500 on it, I told ya the top end is the only thing I rebuilt, the short block is the same mileage as the truck itself. ;) and the trans only has whatever you have put on it since October.

yea sorry morgan, i should be more clear with that... i thought the motor that was in it was from another truck and the #2008 block was out of the truck?

that is correct, the block that is in your truck is from another truck, but I redid the top end

Smoke out of the breather/dipstick = bad things. The compression test will confirm this, I suspect.

Okay i think I'm just paranoid...

Well the overboost problem still exists even though I've turned down my wastegate 7 rotations... But tonight is the most scared i've been so far...

I got on it a little on the highway and before i knew it the boost gauge was saying 20psi... didn't hold it there for more than a second, but since then the motor sounds like it's spuddering under idle and low rpm acceleration...

Would anybody in central jersey have a datamaster or data aq that i could use so i can see what the hell is going on with my motor. This truck has run good a couple days and runs bad the next couple. Ever since it has been cold the truck hates it so hopefully its just that.

sigh... my truck hates me

7 rotations, so did you make the rod longer or shorter? Are your boost vacuum lines new? If they are original, they always should be replace on any SyTy that has some miles on them

If I was have over boost problem the first thing I would do would be to unplug the wastegate solenoid, adjust the wastegate to factory spec, and make sure the base boost is correct at 8-9psi. (This number will be higher if you have a high flow cat or not cat.)

IMO by what you have written, I would guess your motor is blown.

hopefully he's making it longer, I think he is from what he's said before.

they are new, I replaced all the vac lines on the truck when I put the motor back in.

at the moment all he has is a cat, no exhaust on the truck. I told him last night he needs to stay out of the high boost until this is resolved, especially since its getting colder out.

the motor isnt blown, it would barely be running if he bent something or blew a hole in a piston, he said it just idles like shit and has a stumble off the line, hell 90% of the SyTys out there probably have that problem

I told him to check the coolant and oil and check for low levels or any contaminents in either, then move onto ignition parts from there. I have a feeling the high boost took out a plug or the cap has a lot of buildup on it.

Re: Engine troubles... maybe i'm just lost

yea morgan as always thank your for your continuing patience with my ty. As of now all of the coolant levels are fine, I'm going to pull the plugs once i get time in the shop down the street where its nice and warm inside.

Boostedpimp... thanks for your PM, I'm going to post pics of the plugs once i get them out...

I'll start with cleaning the terminals on the cap and replacing the plugs and see where it takes me

Re: Engine troubles... maybe i'm just lost

Well just thought I'd share where I'm at now... the motor has to be rebuild... at least i think so...

It started blowing blue smoke yesterday and thats never good. I have neither the time, money, or vehicle now to finish my semester. I dont know what i'm going to do with the ty yet... I guess i may start looking into a rebuild... sigh...

Blue smoke could be something else. Open up your oil fill cap with the engine running. If its pushing air out, it usually bad news and requires a rebuild.

I just joined syty.net looking for help with tuning. My Sy may have some similar issues; crap idle and strange boost problems mostly. What ecu are you running, and where did you pick up your new vaccum lines?

My 93 Ty (102911 mi.) had very similar symptoms when it was cold. Last week Wednesday it was fine, Thursday I didn't use it, Friday it seized. Sounds like big trouble to me.

From what he has been telling me on the phone and through PM, odds are a ring or two finally took a crap. To what degree we're not sure. I suggested pulling the plugs and looking for excessive oil and go from there. He says oil and coolant levels are good, no mixing and no air bubbles in the radiator when running, so Im thinking its not a head gasket.

His ecm is stock. vaccum lines you can get anywhere, I just replaced them with rubber again when I put the motor back in 3 years ago.

what did yours seize from or have you not looking into it anymore? what was your oil level when it went?

Either way I told Eric Id help him rebuild the motor if thats what it needed, and I have a spare block and pistons and rods and heads if he needed them. All we would basically needs is rings, bearings and gaskets and a few days to pull it, rebuild it and reinstall.
