Exhaust cones and dumps

Has anyone here ever used an exhaust cone? I am wondering how much they can tone down an exhaust system with no CAT and ne Muffler. I am also wondering about the reliability of the electric dumps. How long will they last on a daily driver? Are they fixable when they do break? So far my plan is this:
Take 2 "Y" 3" exhaust "cutouts" and face the Y parts towrds each oother. Weld collectors to the straight part of the pipe as to run right into itself with the electric dump inbetween. Then, take 2 45* mandrel 3" bends and cut accordingly to weld collectors/flanges to those to bolt on between the Y parts of the cutouts. In the Mandrel parts I would insert a cone or two if necassary. Then cut out a straight section of my existing exhaust and bolt the whole thing in place. With the dump open, my truck would sound like it does now. With it closed, it would divert through the Y section and through the cones making it sound like I have a muffler? Anyone think this is a good idea? Just trying to avoid being impounded again. Or even getting exhaust tickets. Im just really hoping there is enogh for it. Havent checked yet but will soon.

Here is what I have in mind:

Re: Exhaust cones and dumps

sounds complicated, just run a electric cutout, its not really that loud if you baby it, and when a cop comes around just shut the dump,

Only times i don't have my dump open is when im crusing on the freeway and when i want to be on the phone driving.
all plates do leak a little bit, as for rebuilding its just a servo motor and a micro switch for the light, pretty simple stuff.

i have a mccord power plate, but i would reccomend the DMH, i had problems with machining flanges lining up and had to get it remachined by my own guy.
DMH is high quality and well worth the cash,
thats my experience and opinion.

I see. Problem is, I dont want to go buy a whole new exhaust system. Although I probably could with the money I would spend on this idea but I just dont want a muffler and if I put one on that forces me to have the dump down stream closer to the underneath of the cab and I definately dont wnat to smell exhaust all the time. I had a muffler bolt to the DP for about 6 months and always smelled exhaust, it drove me nuts. This way, everything is exiting the tail pipe and/or being plumbed back in. Posted my plan in my first BTW.

Re: Exhaust cones and dumps

Why? A cone is only a transition piece. Open at both ends. You'd be bottlenecking your exhaust like crazy.

Not a good idea, IMHO.

edit: Maybe you were talking about these?

From what I've read, most people say they would never have known they were even in the exhaust had they not istalled them theirselves. They don't do anything.

Yeah thats what I meant. So they dont work huh? That sucks, theyre kinda pricey too.

Re: Exhaust cones and dumps

see www.badlanzhpe.com for the exhaust cutouts and Y pipes. He has just re-designed the valve to produce an air tight design that can also be controled via a wireless remote!!!! The valves are also oversized to produce no restriction

I run his old valve on our TY and its still damm good.

Charles who owns badlanzhpe is a top bloke and really does go that extra mile to sort his customers out!!!

Im with the above comment.....It really is not that loud with the cut out open

Hope this helps

Cheers

Heck, I'd like to get rid of my cutout. I don't use it and it leaks

You could run the secondary pipe external to the system with a muffler back further, but then there's a lot more pipe involved

I do not see anything wrong w/a muffler.
You are just asking for tickets running the exhaust system you have.
You are not going to gain much @ all w/a dump pipe/valve.

My exhaust is the stock downpipe, then steps up to 3" tubing, a straight through round muffler ,up & over the axle all the way to the back.
12.29 @ 108 stock turbo, trans,converter,and so on.

Actually, at least for the PTE downpipe, the dump is placed in such a position that it actually disrupts the smooth flow of exhaust when it is closed

Re: Exhaust cones and dumps

I recently pumbed in a Flowteck warlock box and used a cutout with that then into a y pipe and back into the single exit.

This was on our old 4.0 Jeep and was just for a laugh. The old amc 6 sure does sound good....if nothing else..lol

But I guess it could work well on a phoon.

Its really not power loss or gain I am concerned about, I love the sound. I didnt at first but it really grew on me over the years. Guess its lookin pretty grim at this point though.

Re: Exhaust cones and dumps

I'd weld in a straight thru muffler and an exhaust cut out.. when you want to hear the spool up use the cut out.. when your in the area of popo close the cutout and your fine.. I have a 3inch exhaust from the dp back.. A badlanzhpe electronic cutout just before the cat which sounds awesome when opened and after the cat i have a 3inch ss round dynomax ultraflow muffler which is still extremely loud. The muffler is a striaght thru muffler and if you hold it up, you can see clear thru it. In my town the police are the worse, so I can't always use the cutout because the mufflered exhaust is loud enough to cause me to get followed for miles as it is which this way may be loud enough for you I don't know but i'd at least try it first. You can buy a cut out for like $30 and weld it in to see if you like it.. then later on if you do purchase the electronic portion when your sure you like the sound of the dump.. after that put a muffler on the rest of the exhaust and close the dump when popo is creeping up on you

I was wondering if you had taken your Syclone to a track & tested it back to back comparisons w/your electronic cutout vs going through your straight through Gibson?
Thanks!

Nahh haven't had time, my truck is street raced mostly with only like two track visits a year usually.

I have stock dp, bandlanz hpe electronic cutout then 3" cat and 3" piping to a 3" dynomax Ultraflow muffler then 3" to the rear of the truck.. it was custom made by the previous owner.. I put the Ulraflow on in favor of the ATR muffler years ago and added the cutout last year.. Only difference besides the spooling noise being allot louder is i've seen a few extra lbs of boost with the dump open vs closed.
