F-body steering box?

I was wondering if anyone has tried using a steering box from a late 80's F-body (Iroc or Trans am). They are 2 1/4 turns lock to lock. Is this too fast a ratio? The reason I'm asking is because I have one and would rather use it (if I can), than buy another. Any input on this would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: F-body steering box?

Ive never heard of anyone using one in a SyTy, but if it looks the same give it a try and let us know.

Re: F-body steering box?

looks similar to me, but to be honest it's hard to get a good look at the one in the typhoon. I don't think that I want to go through the trouble of changing steering boxes if it wont work. Does anyone know for sure whether it will or won't.

Re: F-body steering box?

I had my stock box converted by Pwr Str Services (? I think) - Springfield, Mo. to the F-Body ratios. Much faster, and may have saved my lunch when some F'ing clown was stopped dead at a freeway onramp in rush hour and I see him 50' feet away doing ~ 40-50 MPH.

Anyway, it was a little jittery, and then when I reinstalled my steering stabilizer, it calmed down. I guess I like it, altho' it takes a little more attention and touch when Ur driving.

Yah, I'm running a F-body box. WS-code, 14:1 35 degrees, Heavy feel, 2 1/2 turns. ('82-up F-cars with 15" wheels)

Re: F-body steering box?

Both use the Saginaw 525 "Bigfoot" gear with different rack ratios and most likely a different valve (the F-Body valve would use a stiffer valve). The pitman arm may also be different, you might check before discarding your old one. The gear housing is the same, though, so it will fit.

Re: F-body steering box?

This one came out of an 89 GTA so I guess it's the HX. Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll give it a try.

John do you know what the ZQ8 box is rated at in terms of lock to lock? Does the 15/13:1 mean it's variable and cahnges between the 2(13:1 & 15:1)? It is the only on your list that doesn't have the information listed.

F-body steering box?

The F-Body steering gearbox will work, the Buick Grand National box will work and the Monte Carlo SS box will work.

The various boxes have different steering limit stops...Meaning and F-Body box may only be able to turn wheels 32 degrees. This means that you may have to do a three point turn, whereas a Typhoon/Syclone box has a 45 degree range, meaning you could do a 180 in less space than the other type box.

You need to use the pitman arm from the truck, not the car.

Lee Manufacturing and AGR make great steering boxes for these trucks, but they are expensive.

On my '93 Typhoon, I used a Lee Manufacturing box. 12 to 1 ratio, medium spool (effort) and it had stops to limit the range to 42 degrees. This kept the tires off the inside frame rail at full lock.

I've used the Monte Carlo SS box on a 5.7 TPI Blazer, and I'm using an AGR box on my Magnusson blown 6.0 2000 S10 Blazer with Auto trac 4-wheel drive.

I've got one on my truck.
