F-Body vs. SyTy - Let the Flaming Begin!!!

Ok this is what I want to here from the SY/TY community ....

I have been in the market for a new car and have been split between a 98 and up (LS1 - 6-speed) TA or Z28 or you guessed it a Typhoon. I want to know if you could go back and change what you bought would you? The main thing that makes me nervous is how hard are these to keep up? I'm not one to ever not change the oil or pound the death out of them but they are sports cars so I want to have some fun with em. This is a whole different area for me to learn, I have a built 79 K5 Blazer and had a 96 Z28. I love the mystique of the SY/TY's and I think that is what draws me to them. Either way let me know what you think, go with a sneaky little truck and expect to pay a lot for parts as they break, (due to age/milage) or go with a LS1 that is pretty self reliant but pay more at the beginning?

I am teh kingpin!
why would there be any flaming?

also, how could you be in the market for a new car, and they stopped typhoons in 93, and Fbodys in 02?

personally, i wouldnt get either. american junk rides.

but if i had to choose, i'd rock a 98-02 LS1 auto, with a 3600 stall, long tubes, loud mouth, lip, Hals, milled heads, and a nice cam and run 11s without a problem. well the tranny might go, but the motor will last for a while.

WHAT!? They don't make them anymore!!! Thanks for the update ....

How's this "New" to me ....

And the set-up that you were talking about I could get for about 14-16,000 a little more then a nice TY ....

Haven't really thought much on the Auto though .... might think about it.

Thanks, anyone else?

My pic...

If you have a mullet, get the F-Body.

If you have to ask if SyTy's are hard to keep up, then they aren't for you ;) Kinda like if you have to ask how much something costs, you can't afford it.

If I had to pic a 'new' new car, I would get an '03 Cobra and do a few easily reversible bolt ons so I could keep my warranty.

But between the two, I would pick a Sy/Ty.

Theres a pretty large difference between an Fbody and a SyTy.

My only advice would be go drive each one and read A LOT about the maintenance and patience requirements of each.

Do some searches on "purchas*" or "buy" theres lots of these posts about the good and the bad sides of ownership.

0-60 in under 5 in the rain.
Carry 4 adults and still be the first to leave every light.
Carry a toolbox chairs cooler luggage, spare tire, jack, and lots of other crap to the nats and back.
Have a 10 yr old vehicle that was short run and is little known to most.
High PSI AWD launches make you giggle like a little kid every time.

All good reasons to own a Typhoon

Yea I know what you mean about if you have to ask!! The main reason I have asked for the info here is all that I'm going to read is problems, I highly doubt that there is going to be someone that posts to say everything is working great! So I know that most of what I read is kinda one-sided .....

I checked out autotrader.com and found one on CO Springs ... actually in my price range too, maybe an omen?

Personally owning a sy is all about having what very few people have. I'd never flame an LS1 as they are sweet motors, but i see 10 of them every day. You'll be lucky to see a syty on the road. You'll most likely be the only one around that has one. They are rare, AWD which is a plus IMO, and a big time sleeper to most people. The ty is probably the most pratical of the 3...but again, to me its all about the rarity and having what most people don't. Even if they think its "an s-10 with a syclone trim package".

leave your drive way and look at the cars you see........do you want a bellybutton or a piece of automotive history?

Don't make the big mistake.

Get a F Body and don't look back.

SyTy's suck ass, and most are slow as shit.

And no, I ain't joking. Just bring it!

If you buy a Sy/Ty you going to need a second car, they take a lot and i mean a lot of maint. I been driving my Sy for about 6 months with out doing any maint because i haven't had the time. Now i have probably 10 things that need to be fixed.

If you want a vehicle that you mostly just turn key and drive, i'll go with a F-body.

I know some people are going to say, i been driving my truck for years without any problems, yes that's probably true. But there are some trucks that runs for years without any problems and there are trucks that need maint all the time. it's just the luck of the draw with our trucks, what you get when you buy a used 10-12 year old Sy/Ty.

I would much rather have a full framed vehicle that can be driven in the snow if necessary. I have owned my Sy for 3 years. I bought it with 36,600 miles and now have 82,000 miles on it. In that time I have replaced the tires, heater core, and a battery. Right now it is in need of shocks, upper and lower ball joints, and a prop shaft. I consider all of these to be maintainence items. I did all the basic preventative maintainence and upgrade items described by other owners and could not be happier than I am.

I cannot tell you how many times I have tried to wipe the smirk 8) off my face after roasting somebody in a mustang, lightning, f-body, corvette, etc. Even just a boost launch for the fun of it brings that same smile to my face. For the price you can pick up a descent used Sy or Ty, there is not better bang for the buck, period. In my opinion.

Really the more that I look at the Typhoon the more I like them.
AWD Turbo
Leather
Seating for a full adults
Sneaky Factor
Something different
Looks

I do have a daily driver, I learned that it is damn hard to work and drive the same car all the time ....

I rode in my friends 96 WS6 and it is fast don't get me wrong but I forgot how little they have for leg room. I'm 6'1 and I almost ripped my neck off getting into her. Well I'm armed with the checklist and as much knowledge that I have absorbed from this site and others, so hopefully I might have one in the next couple months.

Thanks for all the feedback from everybody,
Shane

I was very fortunate with the typhoon I bought. It had 100k miles on it, stock, and appeared to be well cared for. I was basically gettting it from the original owner, and so far it has been very reliable. I even did some mods to it, and it still runs strong with 135K miles. This isn't the story you often here, as it is very easy to slip up and run a bad chip, or crank up the boost and do some serious damage.

If you find one you are serious about, post it up on here, the year and last four of the vin#. That is what I did before I bought mine, and spoke with the previous owner prior to purchasing it off the dealership that had it.

You can even request some help, and if someone is in the area, they can take a look at it with you. Just be patient, and get the right one.

There was a guy on here a few weeks back that needed to sell his 5000mile Typhoon. I think he was trying to get 18,000 for it before the bank took it back. thats as close to new as I think you'll find in a Syclone or Typhoon

What was it you wanted to "here?"

Here it is: Go buy a nice Grand National....

Daron,

You couldn't have said it better  Personally the only car I would trade my SY(same price range) for would have to be a GN, T type, TTA or even better a GNX...
