Fiberglass leaf springs? Whats the difference?

I got a price of a bit over $400 for fiberglass leaf springs with a 2' drop. Why would I want to use those instead of the MUCH cheaper steel ones???

They are much lighter than stock, supposed to be better for launching as well.

All we've seem to see is that they crack on Typhoons, even though I hear they are always working on this problem and have good customer service (?)

i would not get them. the are supposed to save around 80lbs, which is a plus. but they do crack like Brain said. I know Aaron Klingers cracked on him and he recomended me not to get them.

Brian-

you said they seem to crack on the ty's. what about the sy's? i have not heard anything, or seen a sy with them yet. whats you take?

Never heard of a SY cracking them. I had them on my Sy for a short while, Hoover had 'em on his Sy. Don't know of anyone putting any serious mileage on the springs on a Syclone either. You don't see a Syclone transfer weight like a Typhoon either.

Also, a Typhoon spring weighs more than a Syclone spring, so you don't save as much weight going to them on a Syclone.

Put the money towards a coil over ;)

that is unless Al stops making 'em for the Ty's.

Damon had them on his Syclone up here in Anchorage,,, They cracked...
The cold could have had an effect, but they cracked nonetheless..

I've had them for over 40,000 miles and never cracked one! I've done many 1.7X short times and never had a problem. Lots of aggressive cornering and no problem. Ran 12.53@106 on them.

The key to keeping them from breaking IMO, is to make sure the springs are properly fitted onto the axles before lower the weight of the trucks weight onto them. Properly align the everything before cinching down the u bolts and and spring hanger bolts. I believe a misalignment causes shear forces that will stress the springs causes a failure.

One thing that does concern me is the reactiveness of the fiberglass. I wish someone would make a quality adjustable shock that can properly dampen these lively springs.

I have the high pressure Koni gas shocks on the truck now and they are pretty choppy even on the lowest setting.

I have them on my Ty and really love the ride improvement. I agree wtih Ivanko, there are some things to watch out for when installing them. It looks to me like the wedges need to be used. However, the center pin was not long enough to use with the wedges so you need to get longer ones. I think Flex-a-form will supply them if you ask or go to a 4x4 truck shop or use an allen head cap screw. Take plenty of time to make sure the center pin lines up in the hole properly and ease everything into position. Tighten all the bolts evenly by cross torquing back and forth from each side. And do not over tighten. Make sure if you have a sway bar there is plenty of room between the sway bar and the springs. Same goes for the exhaust. A heat shield may be a good idea for the exhaust. Make sure you have a good set of shocks. I don't have a lot of miles on mine bu so far I like them.

Jim,

What did you notice in the driveline geometry that prompted you to use the wedges.

To everyone with the flex-a-forms on a SYCLONE only.

Did you notice the ride was bouncier with them?

Most of the Typhoon owners reported a nice ride, but they have quite of bit more weight over the rear axle.

I tried to keep the pinion angle the same and noticed without the wedges, the front of the base plate would make contact when the rear still had about a 1" gap. I could close the gap by tightening the bolts but that changed the pinion angle. So I installed the wedges and then the front and rear of the base plate made contact at the stame time.

There are different "weights" with the Flex a forms...... Can't remember all the numbers - but.... I think my Ty had 195's - and they had 225's and 195's. I think somone else had 225's and I decided to go with a lighter one..

My Syclone - I think there were 195 and 165 - and I opted with 165's and the ride was about the same as the metal ones....
