Thats almost like the problem I had , make sure you put enough sealant around the water passages . This was mine ..

Yeah Renz, I wasn't aware that the holes needed plugged until after it was put together, so if I remember right I only plugged the 4 I could get to, but wasn't worried about the other's cause I didn't think they went anywhere. I can't remember the part number on the gaskets, just whatever RPM sold me when I got the whole setup, but they don't look anything like the one you have pictured. IIRC they were Victor Renz, but had a blue outline around the passage ways.

I do remember the casting not being very thick, but I did tourqe everything down to factory specs.

Micheal, that's a crazy bad leak, did you just pull it back apart and reseal everything? What was the end result?

DANG! THAT SUCKS! :( Once you get the top of the motor back off, could you *please* get me some pics of ALL the spots that sprung leaks? I'm in the process of doing research on something and my mock up won't cover all the bases that a running motor will... Thanks

Yeah Mike if I end up needing to take it back apart I'll take some pics, I might have some before ones also, I'll look.

Yes I only had to reseal the intake again . It was shooting out both sides in the same manner . You shouldve seen it with a little throttle , looked like a dam firehose ! I just get used to doing everything twice , expect the unexpected !!

I posted about the same thing on my vortec conversion thread. I tried hard to avoid those leaks but the damn thing leaked anyway:

I was able to band aid it by cleaning, drying, and heavily RTVing the area to seal it off. Next time I'm going to seal up that corner like it was Fort Knox.

Well I pulled both bolts that were leaking and it's pretty obvious there's coolant there. I'm going to seal it and let it set over night and try again.

Josh do you have a pic of after you sealed the outside, how crazy did you get with it?

I couldn't find a pic. I probably didn't take one because it was so ugly (to me). :) I cleaned it and dried it and then quickly applied black RTV pretty heavily, over the entire 'plugged vortec bolt' area, the joint where the manifold meets the head, and then at the front where the block, manifold, and head come to a joint. At the rear I didn't have to do nearly as much.

My leak was only a few drops after I beat on it, nothing like the photo posted with coolant shooting out sideways! (Great photo, BTW!)

Who is Victor Renz? Mike's long lost cousin?

Well I worked on it alot today and got quite a bit done. I pulled the bolts and no sealent was there, so I sealed them a couple days ago and rechecked today. Small leak, but nowhere near as bad, hopefully a little more and it will be good.

Anyway got it to run for a solid 5 min or so and noticed a couple other things. Rattle coming from the heads, pulled the valve covers and the rockers were a little loose. Snugged them up and restarted no noise, perfect.

Is the proper torque spec on the newer vortec rockers, is it still 20ft~lbs????

Tried to put the grill back on and it hits one of the A2A pipes now :(

Oh well I'm slowly getting somewhere.

EDIT: Or is 20ft~lbs the torque for the rocker post to the head itself????

IIRC correctly when I put these heads on I tightened the rockers down by feeling for drag on the pushrods, but appearntly that isn't tight enough.

Hey not to sound like a broken record, but that's another thing I've covered in my Vortec Heads & Cam Install thread............ --> http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?p=526073&highlight=torque#post526073 :D

That post also contains a link to full torque specs for a 2002 S10.

Re: Finally, finally, finally, my truck runs again!!!!!

Fawk, that's the one place I didn't even think to look. Man I was searching the internet for hours last night trying to find it and came up with nothing. I wish I would have even remembered or thought to look there. Damnit Josh maybe if you haden't made your post sooo readily available I might have actually remembered them, you made it too easy for me

Well update, I tied everything up (since it has no grill or bumper on right now) and actually backed the truck out of the garage, drove it down the street, and came back. Let me tell you even at idle with just an open downpipe it's sooo F-ing loud. I'll definitely need to get some kind of muffler.

Good news is it drove flawless, except for the turning (the CBR brake stops are still too much I'll need to grind them down some more) and there is still a super small coolant leak ( I'll just add another coat of RVT and hopefully that's it.

I'm really surprised at how hot everything gets even with no load. It doesn't have the hood or grill on it, all I did was let it idle for 10min or so and then the small drive, absolutely NO BOOST and the new trans filter and cooler were sooo hot I couldn't even touch them. I parked it in the garage and went back in there atleast 2 hours later and you could feel such a temp difference in the room. I guess it's just been awhile.....:)
