Finally Made It To The Track

Well, I finally made it to the track for the first time after getting rained out last weekend. ItI was really crowded being that it was the last day of the racing season at Numedia Dragway. They were really pushing the cars thru really fast and I didn't have enough time to do the correct launch procedure. As matter of fact, I don't even know what boost or rpm that I left on for the first two runs. It just happened too fast. I just held the brake and let it go.

I screwed up on my second run. I accidently pulled the shifter down into 2nd and didn't know it till I felt it breaking up and sorta losing power and I shifted it and only did a 13.42 on that run. After two runs and waiting over an hour between, I went up for street/automatic eliminations and I red lighted on the first run and it was over for me. My first run was my best one. Sure thought I would have done better but I'll try again in the spring after I get my alky installed and tuned.

I mixed about six gallons of 112 race gas with a 1/4 tank of 93 when I first arrived. Hopefully I can improve the next time I go. Here are the times I got on the two runs I made. The second one is the one where I screwed up and l ran it out in second gear before shifting. Both runs were on T-1,18. Tire pressure 28 front,26 rear .I think I launched somewhere between 5 and 8lbs but not sure.

1st run... 60' ......1.785 --------------- 2nd run... 60'......1.835
330......5.212 --------------- 330.....5.281
1/8.......8.148 -------------- 1/8......8.387
MPH....83.79 --------------- MPH...77.01
1000.....10.707 --------------- 1000...11.126
1/4........12.903 ----------------- 1/4......13.428
MPH......102.17 ---------------- MPH...97.90

Any pointers for my next trip will be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Re: Finally Made It To The Track

I would say with the fuel you had in your tank you could have run 20 PSI.

What is the size of your compressor wheel?

The cat slows down your spool up time.

You can install a 12 volt vacuum booster so you do not need to do all that reving in neutral, push on brakes, put into drive yada yada yada.:2cents:

Your runs were not that bad you have more in it.

Re: Finally Made It To The Track

that 1/4 tank of 93 kills the octane of 112 ! next time empty the tank, put 1/4 tank of race gas in, turn up the boost, and have about 14lb in the rear tires. make sure the converter is locked and shift points are good. your time will drop!

For test and tune, don't even worry aboot the tree.Relax and spool her up.When it feels right.let'er rip.The timer doesn't start when the light turns green,it starts when you launch.

Re: Finally Made It To The Track

Yea, I should have waited till the brakes were right but I was anxious to leave on the green. The first race was against a 67 Camaro with a set of slicks and the second was and Acura. I toasted them both, even on the hole shot. The last race where I red lighted was against a S10/350 and he only dialed in a 13.48.

The launch on the first one was the hardest launch that I have had since I owned my truck. It must have been from all the rubber on the track. A couple of spectators came up to me an commented on how it squatted in the rear and the front end lifted and the whole truck tilted. They asked if I had my suspension set up a certain way but I told them it was stock.

Re: Finally Made It To The Track

I generally try to keep a 6-7 psi spread, front to back. ~20 in the back, 27-28 front. Depends on your tires, gotta play with it to figure it out.

EDIT: Thought I'd throw these in there for reference. Roughly the same mod list, except I have a 9/11 converter, and ran 22-24 psi on a well-tuned chip. These were quite a few years back.

Code:
RT 1.764 1.768
330 4.927 4.919
1/8 7.613 7.599
MPH 91.25 91.4
1000 9.946 9.937
1/4 11.942 11.941
MPH 112.27 111.71

Re: Finally Made It To The Track

I'll try dropping the rear tires down to about 20 the next time. I maybe going back to the track in two weeks. The track I raced at is now closed, but I found out there is one about 2 hrs away at Beaver Springs, Pa. I also have a progressive SMC alky kit that I bought new back in January but haven't installed it yet but it will be a while before I get to it.

I've heard good and bad about Beaver springs. I think they race pretty late in the season. Drop me a pm if you haed to numedia next year. Mine should be done and the track is about and hour from me.

Re: Finally Made It To The Track

Beaver Springs sucks. Its the most mom & pop track i've ever been to. It's the closest one to me (60mi) so i used to go a bit back in my honda days.

Rumor is the track goes uphill by about 13". The drive to the track is more fun than racing at the track...its plugged in the middle of some mountains. I'm pretty sure the altitude at the track sucks also....basically its a slow track any way you look at it.

If you're gonna take a syty there, post it up ahead of time..i wouldn't mind meeting up.

Re: Finally Made It To The Track

It's gonna happen tonight. I will be leaving work today at noon to go get the Syclone inspected, It ran out a couple days ago. I will be leaving for Beaver Springs around 3:30pm and hopefully arrive around 5:30. I'm really looking forward to running my truck again and hopefully I won't red-light this time. I'm also gonna try shifting manually from drive to over-drive at 4500 rpm. Other than race gas and letting some air out of my tires, does anyone have any tips other than a paper clip in the adl connector?

If I lock up my converter, can I still manually shift from drive to over-drive?

I wouldnt shift the transmission manually from drive to overdrive, thats an easy way to explode the transmission. When you go to the track are you adjusted your throttle body cable? When I had a stock throttle body I use to always adjust my throttle body cable.
Good luck,

Nick

Re: Finally Made It To The Track

Well, I made it there and had a good time but didn't run as good as I thought I would. The weather was great for turbo cars, ( down in the 40's), but not good for traction. With the converter locked, I could hear the tires chirping all the way thru second gear. Everyone that I talked to there said that the track was a little slower that Numedia Dragway and they were right. Also the track was poorly prepped. Stagging lanes had crap all over them and overall the place was poorly run. Hardley any safety issues were in place. It was sorta like anything goes.

I got myself 10 gallons of 112 and let some air out and had the boost set at T1-20. The last run was on t2-20.

RUN #1................................RUN #2..............................RUN #3......................RUN#4
60'..........1.860................................1.838..................................1.890.........................1.836
330..........5.367................................5.309..................................5.315.........................5.266
1/8..........8.371.................................8.297..................................8.279.........................8.224
MPH........81.75.................................82.13..................................82.40.........................82.70
1000........10.972................................10.895................................10.870.......................10.800
1/4...........13.175................................13.099................................13.065.......................12.980
MPH.........102.71...............................102.22.................................102.59.......................103.48

The fourth run was the 1st elimation run and I beat my dial in of 13.00 flat by .02 and lost. I should have dialed in a 12.95. The race was against a new Silverado SS and he ran a 15.86. I caught him by the 1/8 and should have let off and coasted thru, but just couldn't seem to do it. Overall I had a good time and hope to do it one more time this year. That track is open till the first week in Nov.
