Brian, if the paint on the tailgate was like that in the movie, I would recommend leaving it but since it was not, it is not considered original to the truck in my book. Paint it to match and drive it with an enormous smile

I do believe this is the ty from the movie. There is documentation stating that 0404 was leased to Warner Brothers and it just so happens that 0404 is an Aspen Ty. I think Rick Harrison would approve and most importantly, so does Jimmy...

A freshly painted tail gate would stick from the rest of the truck, being that the rest of the paint is 20 years old and let face it, it wasn't very good new... I vote for painting the whole truck...

IMO, a paint gauge means squat in this case. You need to work the paint to the owners desired goal if that is even possible. As your working the panel, you need to watch carefully, very carefully. Someone with experience can tell by eye what needs to be done and what to do from the get go. Agressive compound, light compound, by hand or wheel. More polish than compound? Have to be aware that the paint was crappy from day one and its single stage. If someone tells you drop it off in the morning and it will be ready by noon, move onto another shop. If someone tells you $200, move on. To save what is there and do it properly, it's a day job and then some. Have the moldings masked off so the wheel does not leave marks. Same for cladding, handles ect... Mask off the door when working the cladding. One thing at a time. You get the idea. To do it right, it's very involved. If you decide to spray a gate (this one or a diff one), get the qtrs to their best color and have the gate matched to the qtrs or it will stick out and your goal won't be reached. If you want a perfect truck front to rear, paint the whole truck. I'd be happy to do it for you. Perfect show car finish front to rear. But, it's not cheap.

If you can pain the tailgate only, great. If you have to paint the whole truck, that would probably be better.

Buying another tailgate and leaving the original one on the side is crazy - why???

By all means leave it stock but don't get hung up on keeping the truck in poor condition because of authenticity issues.

Does it run?

This is just my opinion. Is the rest of the paint presentable once it is cleaned up? Is the paint 100% original? If yes read below.

You have a Typhoon that is 1 of 28 with Aspen Blue, that was discontinued because of paint problems. There aren't that many nice ones left with low miles and yours happens to not have a roof rack. So on stop of being super rare, it is also one of the few that has original paint and as the Aspen Carfax thread shows many of them have super high miles or accident history. . It doesn't hurt that it has a paper trail to be used by the movie studio as well.

The full leather seats do not help the originality, though. I do not know what else has been changed. If your going to fix this truck up, you need to do it right if you want to maximize its value.

Exactly. The sad thing is that a quality paint job is gonna run $4000-$5000 minimum (I know from experiance). Who knows yet if the fuel system is all gel'd up and requires attention, plus the cost to fix the seats, fix the wheels, etc to get it back to where it should be. We might up the value some b/c of the WB contract but the average buyer could care less. To them, it is just another blue Typhoon that is worth $7500.

I would personally hand rub the existing paint to see how it responds. If it turns out nicely, paint the gate to match. If not, spray the whole truck but again, after shelling out $13000 to buy it, a quality paint job sky rockets it to 1) more than it is worth and 2) more than he will ever get out of it IMO. Having stated that, I STILL would not be cutting corners on an Aspen to save a few dimes...especially this one.

NEAT!!!

I thought you mentioned he was asking too much for it ... what made you jump on it , the rarity of the color and the history? ---

Nice job Brian!! Congrats on the purchase.

I have to throw my 2 cents in on the seats, from the pics, it looks pretty clear that the leather on the back side is smoother and newer looking than original on the front part. I'd bet money they were re-done this way.

Yeah, pretty much! How often does an opportunity like the present itself and be so close to home.

As for the seats, not really sure what the story is on those. Yeah, they had to be redone at some point, but by who and when is what i would like to find out.

How does it run?

I totally understand the feeling. That's why I bought TTA #5 ... I couldn't believe it was only 30 min away from me !!!

ENJOY :) ---

I picked the Ty back up from the detailer today, and I gotta say, I'm totally impressed at the job this guy did!! He was reccomended to me by a friend of mine so I didn't even know the guy, but he does this for side work and over the course of 5 days, he put 16 hours of work into it. It cost me $400 in the end which isn't too bad if you ask me! Here is the end result:

I also picked up a mint tailgate for nothing, and dropped that off at the painters last week, so that should be ready to go on soon too! I'm so glad this guy was able to save this paint. It is very thin though and you can see a couple spot very faintly that the clear is totally gone on it.
