It's a single stage paint. There is no clear
Yep, right on all counts! :rotf:QUOTE=turboj91;959151] Someone with experience can tell by eye what needs to be done and what to do from the get go.... obviously your man has the experience.
Have to be aware that the paint was crappy from day one and its single stage...one for me
If someone tells you drop it off in the morning and it will be ready by noon, move onto another shop...two for me
If someone tells you $200, move on...three for me
To save what is there and do it properly, it's a day job and then some...four for me
Have to excuse my boasting. I'm drunker than Jimmy usually is.
Yeah, still gotta hang that thing back up!! :tup:Next step is to put that rear view mirror up so you dont get stopped by the Township Police again. lol
I'm almost 100% sure its original yet. Why else would the tailgate look the way it does?.....unless it already has been repainted over the last 20 years which is a good possibility (he could rub a lil' compound on it and find out real quick). Either way, it turned out nice with some effort.
So I did a little investigating just now, and I still think its original but one thing does stand out as questionable, its missing the silver strips between the door and fender behind the cladding that makes the cladding blend together better. Both drivers side and passenger side are missing. The rocker cladding had the big plastic button rivets as it should. The door cladding has metal rivets as it should. If you look down between the gap in the cladding on the front of the fender where it meets the bumper, the paint shows now signs of being taped off or any defining line like a tape line. Also, around the back side glass molding, I see no evidence of any kind of tape marks. Same with the door jams, everything seems to flow as it should. Same.with bottoms of the doors where the door panels meet the metal. No signs of any kind of tape or paint work. So besides it missing those silver strips, to me, everything I see tells me its original paint. The tailgate is a clue, but there's another, better clue: Has the cladding been removed??
You've had enough of these apart, you should remember the appearance of original cladding fasteners. I have yet to see a set of cladding put back on with 100% un-detectable they've-never-been-changed rivets. Plus most peeps don't care what they use, as long as it works. Especially under the car. I've seen a lot of screws used where rivets were originally under the car.
If the cladding fasteners are OEM, look for signs of masking at the cladding. If you don't find any, it's factory applied paint. Cool. I'm glad to see you saved the paint.Regardless of condition, they're only original once.
The gray tape behind the cladding didn't start showing up until mid year '92 production from what I've been told.
Interesting once again. Mine doesn't have any of the strips. My build date (pas sticker) says 10/91. Another thing that I questioned about the truck is the red GMC grill letters. They could have easily been swapped out at some point though.
