Flipped oil pressure needle revisited

Re: Flipped oil pressure needle revisited

Mine has had the 'flipped oil pressure needle' issue since I bought it back in '09. This looks like a neat and quick way to deal with it.

Thanks for the write-up.

I bought a Sy recently that has this issue. Hope to put Dave's instructions to good work today.

My Sy does it, we fixed it (by dismantling dash - before reading Dave's paper clip idea) and it flipped again. So I might need the second pin stopper.

I fixed my permanently. All I did was trim the stopper down enough for the needle to slide by if it flipped. Worked like a charm.

Huh. Interesting. And it reads (semi) accurately?

Re: Flipped oil pressure needle revisited

While this sounds like a great idea, i just wouldn't want to drill a whole in the cluster. But with this and cutting down the stock stopper we now have three methods of fixing it. Good to have some options.

1) Old how tow, install small black finishing nail --- Fixes, will never flip over again.
2) DaveP drill/paper clip --- Can still flip, but easy to fix, and easy to implement.
3) STAGEUP cut down stock stopper --- Will flip over, and over again.

I always wondered if that would work. It was to be my next thing to try if mine flips back. Thanks for the confirmation.

Re: Flipped oil pressure needle revisited

What is the oil pressure supposed to read?

Mine is ALMOST pegging the 80 at startup which seems to be normal after reading this thread , and I was starting to wonder if I was having a problem somewhere.

My needle also seems to "flutter" lightly ... not to the extreme where I think I am having pump problems ... is the flutter typical? ---

The "normal" reading can vary a lot depending on several factors. Particularly depending upon which oil pump, and bypass valve spring is installed.
My observations on stock engines, with stock oil pumps and springs, 10-30 or straight 30 weight oil, have been thus:

3/4-ish cold start, and prior to complete warm-up.
1/2-ish at temp, off-idle.
1/4-3/8-ish at temp, at idle.

One of my Syclones has a "hi volume" (longer gears) oil pump with the yellow spring. It's cold reading is about 7/8-full scale with 10-30 oil. I've never observed any warm readings, as I've never driven it enough to get it warm.

Re: Flipped oil pressure needle revisited

Just a lil revisit to this thread... I might have already posted a pic of this a few years ago on another thread, but I don't remember.

I didn't like the idea of drilling a new hole in the gauge face, and I also didn't like the idea of cutting the pin, so pulled the pin out. I came across this small black plastic piece that's part of a footswitch assembly used on some guitar effects pedals my work makes, put a couple dabs of thin super glue on it and popped it in there. Looks pretty darn clean, and it's maybe 1/4mm bigger than the base of the stock needle. It will come right out if you decide to go back to stock... provided you hang on to the stock pin. Still can't understand why they'd put top pins on the temp gauge and the gas gauge and not the other 2... that must have been where they decided to cut the budget

Re: Flipped oil pressure needle revisited

There is another way to do this in theory. I haven't tried it nor do I know how to implement it. Install a momentary switch with polarity reversed to act as a reset button. The needles flips over, press momentary switch and flips back-Voila!

One more, drill tiny hole into clear cluster dust shield and use a piece of thin wire to flip back the needle. All of these fixes require some sort of modification to "stock appearance " except for taking out the cluster every time.
The real fix would be to add the piece of electronics that was left out in that circut by the disgruntled employee which prevents the jolt of electricity from flipping the needle.

Re: Flipped oil pressure needle revisited

I had it happen once. I drilled the hole and flipped the needle over with a piece of wire. I can understand those of you that do not want to drill a hole in the cover. But since it is hidden. I am not bothered by having the hole drilled.

I like the idea of just taking the screws out that attach the headlight switch to the panel. Then just using the wire to flip the needle back over. Fast and easy.
