FMIC project started.

Im really sick of the air to water intercooler. I have a johnson intercooler pump heater hose lines and all new coolant. I know I have flow because I can see the coolant moving through the intercooler when I take to cap off. It gets so hot at 20 psi that it starts to boil. Time for the front mount. This should take me most of the winter to do. I like the look for a front mount intercooler under the grill anyways.

Re: FMIC project started.

that is the same intercooler I put in my truck. with three inch piping my temps were 20 degrees higher then ambient but the recovery rate is the big difference, did mine in a weekend also, but recently switched back to air to water but added a vw radiator for the cac and an ice box and my temps are around 5 degrees over ambient and 10 to 15 degrees below ambient with ice in the icebox. good luck with the install

Yeah thats one thing I didnt like about the air to water intercooler. If you hot lap that intercooler gets heat soaked bad. I just want something more consistent and a better recovery rate like you said. I think I can stabalize intake temps pretty well with the alky injection.

Make sure you test fit the bumper and grill before you proceed. I don't think with the Center bar and on the Core Support it will fit like that. It makes the IC stick out too far. Atleast it did on mine when I did it. I have mine all the way against the A/C Radiator and I still had to trim my Grill at the very bottom corners of the grill. Mine was a 3" core.

Yep. Im modiftying the hood latch support. Im cutting out a section on it to so the intercooler fits right inside it. I also removed the AC condenser. I want some space between the radiator and the IC so there is no heat transfer from the radidator to the intercooler.

The problem you are going to run in to is that the main supports for the radiator core will be in your way. You will have to hack them up to get it to fit right. I did it that way and didn't have to cut in to my grill. Either way, you'll be doing some cutting. The cutting of the core support can be very painful if you're not careful, wear some good gloves:lol:
Here is how mine turned out

Now that I have the core support out of the truck I have done some considerable moddifying to it. It just wasn't possible with it in the truck so I thought while I had my motor out this would be a great time. Here is what I have so far

Not sure if that makes any sense to you but even with those "pillars" indented, I will still be cutting some of the grill.

I have a similar cooler. I had to fab the hood latch and cut some plastic off the mount on the grill that screws on to hood latch bracket. Here are some pics. I have a/c too. Its a tight fit but its all together now an works well.

by the way I have some left over 3"aluminum pieces 90, 45, etc., silicone connectors and clamps if you need them.

Thats a good idea but are you using hood pins?

Re: FMIC project started.

If the question is for me on the ltch. I had a guy weld a plate behind it once it was cut and we drilled 2 more holes so we could have 4 to hold it. It holds great

I have the same core, its very nice, the highest IA temps ive had this summer was 125. If your still running the stock turbo I would run 2.5in pipe not 3in, another thing you may want to run lower degree thermostat, because your radiator will heat up a little being that its blocked by the whole intercooler. Heres a link to a couple of pics I have of mine

Im going to run a 3 inch and then couple it with at 3" to 2" adapter. Im going bigger turbo soon so I want to be ready for it. Yes I do have a 160* thermostat. The truck runs really cool even after hard runs.

Wow how much did you have to cut out of the core support to fit the intercooler?
