the negative battery cable to do it correct you need to remove the Passenger wheel, wheel well, heater box, intercooler and a/c components if you have a/c  , Im 5 hours into the swap and im starting to think I should have found another spot to run the ground to , But on the bright side with no heater box or intercooler in the way its real easy to change the valve cover and route the plug wires nice and pretty

Your doing it wrong :) I r & r mine with heater box and A/C still installed... The worst part is doing that bolt behind the PS with the motor mount pads being a close 2nd.

Is that why most people just ground the stock cable when relocating the battery???

Now I remember why that was one of the parts I installed with the engine on a stand  ... I did it in the GT with everything in place, but no hood or fenders and that was still a PITA without the intercooler mess either

I thought the negative battery wire ran to the back of the pas side head? and had a ground to the motor and to the core support?

Is it the lack of room to get at the back of the head that is the problem?

That is correct, it should be bolted to the back of the passengers head. The problem is that with the intake on and the A/C box in place, you can't really even reach the thing, much less get a wrench on it.

I rerouted mine to the backside of the driver's head when I relocated my battery

Its not the easiest bolt to get started, but its was doable atleast for me. I didn't spend that much time on it, probably spent more time tightening and loosing it. One thing I learned working on my Corvette is that you don't drop the f-ing bolt. In this case don't drop the starred washer.

The only thing I've every really worked on is the Ty, so that rule is law always. I could get it if I needed to, but it would be like those retarded tranny case bolts that I have to pull when I get my new converter

Yep, its a pain but while I had the heater box out I was able to wash and wax the fire wall so it looks much better, and its easy to change the RH valve cover, and detail the rh side of the block

IM O the front diff is the worst thing. The neg cable I just used a 9/16" rachet wrench if I remmeber correctly and it was somewhat of a piece of cake. Ofcourse there are those that think the front diff is a piece of cake and just falls right out but mine was a different story.

Mine came out real easy... it was getting it back in that was the hard part. My vote goes for tightening motor mounts with the front diff installed. I refuse to ever do that again

Re: found the worst part nto change on these trucks

I just had my lower intake off and was looking at that bolt. Left it alone. :squint: But if I had to change things I'd just run that cable to a different spot. Unless yur dead set on keeping things original. Lots of good places for a ground, that one just keeps it outa the way, WAY outa the way.

Ken my block is in need of some detail itself:

I got some stiff nylon and wire brushes, is that what you recommend with maybe some degreaser? Any other tips will be helpful.

It is difficult to deal with but I managed to do mine with just the IC and fender well out. Everyone's truck (and patients) are a little different though ;)

I got mine out years ago by just removing the upper IC, didnt seem to be that big of a deal.
