Front wheels "hopping" No limited Slip?

Just purchased a Ty. When I cut the wheel all the way to the left or right and reverse (maybe forward too but haven't noticed it), the front outside wheel "hops" as if there was no limited slip. The seller said it was something to do with the all wheel drive. Is this normal? My brother tells me it's a common problem on AWD Jeep and it is the viscous coupling. I was thinking maybe the ABS speed sensor, but nothing came up on the diagnostic (I got a 14..does anyone know what that is and a 35..loose connection in left rear...is the left the driver side?). Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

thats normal sorta.

the front is an open diff. unless someone has installed an aftermarket carrier and or a spider replacement of some sort.

now I've heard that if your front wheels hop and you dont have a locker in the front it means your xcase is goin out. but I wouldnt worry about that until you begin to have other problems.

my suggestion, drive it and dont worry bout it until something else happens. :fadein:

Thanks! But how does the xfer case have anything to do with the speed of the left vs right wheels? We have a viscous xfer case and this is where the front axel links into the drive train and where the 65/35 power split is regulated. The logical place to look would be the front differential. But being an open differential, there should be zero wheel hop. And this truck is 100% bone stock.

If there is mechanics who would be willing to give me a readers digest education on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, I think I'll just keep driving it until something else happens!

On another note, does anyone know what a code 14 is on the ABS diagnostic?

Thanks

georgiasyty.com has all the trouble codes listed. and yes I know it's hard to believe but thats how gm diagnosed the xcase as goin bad. and I've done it with many good running stock trucks and the front wheels dont hop. try it on another and it does. so you tell my why it does it. I dunno but thats what the procedure was for a bad xcase. I recently had one go out on a sy here at the shop. had the wheel hop and all. bout 300 miles down the round the xcase bit the dust. so it makes sence to me. and I can understand your lack of beliefe in the procedure bc believe me I know drivetrains and a open diff is never supposed to wheel hop. but do some searching and this is what you will find.

Well if that's what they say....and if it works properly afterwards....
I think I'll follow your original advice and wait until something else happens. Or at least I'll wait until waarmer weather arrives before tackling this project in the driveway.

Thanks a million and have a happy new year.

Wheel Hopping

Wheel Hopping

I get that "wheel hop" on all 3 of my Turbo cars, and the Ty is the only 4 wheel drive vehicle. I'm thining it nhas to do with the front suspension, not the front Diff.
