Fuel Pump Question

I just went to start my truck and it wants to turn over and then doesn't then, I finally got it running and it died out. I just changed my fuel filter and it was horrible. So, I'm thinking my fuel pump is probably shot now too. Two questions, and I know this one varies from truck to truck but, what kind of mileage do stock fuel pumps usually last for and the second question is, what fuel pump do you recommend? I see that a lot of people have a Walbro 255. Is that the fuel pump of choice for SyTys?

Thanks for your response in advanced.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Pump life just depends on the area your in (gas quality) and probably how often you drive low on fuel and whatnot (gas helps keep the pump cool). I dont really think you can put an average life span on them. Ive seen mid low mile trucks go back to trucks with 100+k on them.

Walbro255 is the standard choice for stock replacement.

You can order from here: http://www.autoperformanceengineering.com/

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Thank you sir, I appreciate the input...now the fun begins with the install of the fuel pump. Is it true that it's best to take of the bed to do this?

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Sounds like the pump has had a rough life if the filter was all plugged up... Anywho, make sure that the ECMB fuse isn't blown. Because if it is, the fuel pump won't get any power. There is also a fuel pump test connector by the firewall that you can try too:

"Applying 12 volts to fuel pump test connector to troubleshoot fuel pump or set fuel pressure with vacuum line still connected and motor off (note fuse for safety)."

The test connector is a direct connection to the fuel pump, it will run the pump even if the ECMB fuse is blown/removed.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

I can't say thank you enough for sending me that link. I think from start to finish it took me about 2.5 hours to take out my fuel pump and put in a Walbro. Definitely the way to go by tipping the bed at an angle. So, thank you again for making my life a little easier.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Ah yes, the good old fuel pump swap in the first gen... Did one last weekend on my bud's S10. Gave him the old pump of of my S10 that I rolled. It was kinda "pickled" after being in a mason jar of gas for two years to keep the seals from drying out.
