G Tech?

Has anyone tried one of the new G Techs? How accurate are they? I was thinking of buying one to get some rough number, since the closest track is 2 hrs away. I tried a friend of mines "GMeter" but it seemed like it was pretty inaccurate and he only paid like $150.

thanks

Re: G Tech?

I've used one of the old G-Tech Pro's. It was a fine piece of machinery. So I can only guess that new ones are even better yet. I've seen some people on this forum have pictures of their times on one of the new ones. So at least a few of us have them.

zero to sixty times aren't bad. i'm pretty doubtful if the horsepower readings are good. i tried my friends and this is what it told me. it told me my 500 plus horsepower camaro had about 216 horses. just for fun we measured my long base denali. it said it had 280... a little off here i think...

i didn't have the camaro tuned worth shit and it said it ran 0-60 times in 5.8 boggin it out of the hole because i kept fryin the tires. lousy tune didn't give me any inbetween. the denali went 0-60 in 10.8. i think to get more accurate horsepower reading you have to drive faster because the faster i went the more power it said my camaro made. he told me he took his lightning down the strip and the g tech was within one tenth of what the track was.

fun to play with, but i didn't think it was too accurate. it seems to do timing ok but a dyno it ain't

have fun

by the way... if it had said my small block Z had made 635 horsepower i would have said it was really accurate and loved it... :)

Re: G Tech?

If you buy one take it to the track and dial it in. The first time at the track with mine I ran an exact et on the 5th pass playing with the weight feature.

Re: G Tech?

I use it for 0-60 and it works great. Just make sure it's properly leveled before you do any runs.

Re: G Tech?

I love mine. It's the 1st gen, which I've heard, although I have no proof, are more accurate than the newer model. It's espcially great for tracking improvements after mods w/o having to track test them. Just don't think that you can use one to prove anything to anyone

Re: G Tech?

You got to realize that the dyno feature really has to rely on so many different factors. Coefficiency to drag is a major one. It also is gonna be inaccurate if your spinning the tires. And do you really know the exact weight of your car with you in it, and all your stuff, and all the fluids, and the amount of fuel in the tank, and the weight of the dirt on the car? Don't forget, it's really measuring wheel HP and not crank HP. But all the timed features, as well as the G-force feature are very accurate!

Re: G Tech?

And if you're using the hp feature as they specify in the manual spinning the tires is pretty unlikely, as they specifically state that a run to measure hp is different than a run to measure accelleration, and that you should be in second or third (high enough not to spin your tires).

I think a lot of the inconsistent hp numbers are because people do 0-60 blasts or 1/4 passes and then look at the hp numbers. Hell, run two dynos and your hp numbers will differ, but the point of a dyno isn't usually to measure your actual hp, but to measure the effect of tuning or parts changes, plus or minus from your baseline, and I feel that g-techs are fine for that purpose. Not quite a dyno, but a hell of a lot cheaper.
