Gear indicator repair

I pulled out the console well, moved it around w/o removeing the shift knob. I get in it today and the gear selctor does not work. It is just in one posistion until I get hard on the brakes then it slides a little forward. I apparently most have knocked it loose when I was carefully moving it around. Any ideas how to get it re-connected? I plan to buy a pair of ring pliers this weekend and see if I can get the shifter knob off to get a better look.

it fairly simple, you have to take the indecater apart again. the needle has a two pronged piece that traps a pin connected to the shifter, if the pin isnt between the two prongs, the needle will move around freely.

Can I do this with the shifter knob in place or should I buy the ring pliers to make it easier?

You can do it with everything still bolted down,just gotta remove the cupholder screws.
