Gilbert Prop Shaft work with 4l80e?

I'm just starting to get some ideas to modify my sy and I want to get the foundation ready for what I eventually want to be an 11 sec truck.

My first mod is going to be a gilbert prop shaft. But my question is will this still work down the road when I swap to a 4l80e?

Thats what i thought. Does anyone offer a complete 4l80e conversion kit for these trucks?

George blake offers the front shaft and the conversion kit. 1300 for the kit and 400 for the shaft. He also offers a nice built 4l80e trans, computers, and TC too. hen all you need it to get the rear shaft shortened and you are set.
Total cost around 5500$

good info when having the rear shaft shortened do you just use a driveshaft shop for this?

I dont think they make a loop for the 80e conv yet. You probably can have one welded on. Thats what I will try to do.

I can get you anything you need for the swap. Having the rear shaft shortened is very inexpensive as they just remove 3.25" and weld it back together and balance it. Any driveline shop can do the rear shaft for $100 or less.

So the Gilbert shaft I sell for the 4L80e is longer and you must use a short manual gear selection shaft in the trans to clear it on the 4L80e.

80e swap is sounding alot more complicated than expected but I agree it may be worth the hassle since its kind of a one-time buy type deal.

Is the short manual gear selection shaft included in your kit? If not where do I find one?

Are there any 700r's that will hold up reliably in a high 11 sec truck?

Yep, short shaft is included in the kit.
A 700 can't be compared to an 80e on any level.
I can build a 700 that you can beat the piss out of but it will never be an 80e. 700 has a tiny sprag and an output shaft drilled full of holes for lube and an aluminum input drum. It will never be bullitproof. And with the 6 speeds coming out, I don't forsee any furth effort put into them in the aftermarket. I can get billet input and output shafts but you still have an aluminum drum and tiny sprag. All it takes is one hit at the wrong time and the sprag will flip. But those that stay with the 700 assume the risk. Just remember you have to let it cool off and if you beat on it daily don't expect it to last like a trans in a Honda that makes 98HP.

george im looking into a 80e swap myself. Ive used PATC before for some performance transmissions what kind of power levels will your 80e hold. Ive been told by them 1000hp and subtract 20% for turbo/nitrous aplications (800hp). How strong is your build ? How much work is the swap? My motor is out right now, time Man Up !! Im sure all of us whould like to know whats the total cost of the kit? Complete bolt in? Thanks

My trans is not the same thing as PATC. Jeremy Duncan has been beating the piss out of one I built for him for over a year now. He's the guy doing all the donuts, launching constantly, driving to the track, racing, driving back home. There are other guys that have them but Jeremy's is probably the most public.
I can build them that hold well over 1200HP. It just depends on how much you want to spend.
The kit is a bolt in. The trans and transfer case have to be installed as a unit if you still have the torsion bar suspension for the front. If you have the coil over from JS manufacturing, then you can install them separately.
I'm getting my web site together so you'll be able to see more as it comes along.

Guys always say, "so what's the cost of the kit? Everyone wants to know. " That link has been up since June. I've even had the link in my signature. That doesn't work either

The link is one thing George... Put it in your signature!!!!!!!
3 levels of build and then a price for the install kit.

The thread is somewhat informative but just put it down where it has Prime gears and it'll solve alot of questions and you sending 10000000 links. Just a idea...

Hey... Will the Gilbert shaft work with a TH400 trans? What is needed for that install?
I'm asking somthing that's been asked for sure...
Thanks, Scott~

You mentioned the new 6spds... somthing on the horizon for them in our trucks?

some work is required for the th400. I think the th350 is a direct swap.

Your looking at a long time before the 6 speeds will be worth putting in. They aren't even available yet.
Most guys have just been buying the output shaft and the adaptor plate for the 400 from me. Mine is different from the one TCI sells.

My favorite is when you send the link that has the answer to a guy's question and then he asks a different question that is answered on the same page.

So no. Putting it in my signature won't help. Then I get phone calls. They ask the price for something. I tell them the price on the link. They tell me thanks. I tell them about the links if they have any other questions on pricing. Then they tell me, "yep, I saw it. Just wanted to hear it from the horse's mouth...." Then they still don't buy anything....30 minutes I could've spent working on a paying customer's trans.

Yet, he still is nice in his e-mails after all the questions, even before I bought one of his trans. :D

I like your new signature there below your post... That's sharp!

I'm going to give you a call today about a gilbert prop shaft and a few questions on the TH400/350 that I plan on installing on my other Typhoon when it's ready.
Thanks for your help,
Scott~

Re: Gilbert Prop Shaft work with 4l80e?

Thank you very much! I did that last night after the family went to bed.
I've been under my Ty and working on GJP's trans today.
If you what you are wanting to know is how long it has to be for the prop and the TH400.
If you use my kit (output shaft and plate), the propshaft needs to be 1 5/8" longer (I special order stuff all the time). If you are deciding between the 350 and 400, do the 400. Better gear spacing, quicker in the quarter and MUCH stronger. TH350 has planetaries and low clutch the same size as the 700. No real upgrade. 350 holds up better than the 700 because there is no 4th clutch to burn up and cycle like the 700 and no little bitty sprag to overrun.

Re: Gilbert Prop Shaft work with 4l80e?

Since we are on the topic. I know the rear shaft has to be shortened 3.25 inches, but how long does the front to be lengthened? I would guess the same 3.25 but I dont like to guess. Thanks BTW its a stock length gilbert.
