Good News + Bad News = Fuel Economy Question.

Good news – I got a new job!
Bad news – Its 67 miles round trip from home.
Good news – The trip is most all interstate!
Bad news – My Typhoon is my only transportation.
Good news – With the job I got a raise!
Bad news – Not enough to buy a used gas saver.
Good news – I can buy new wheels & tires!
Bad news – I don’t know how to adjust the speedometer for different height of tires.
Good news - I am a member of this for forum!
Bad news – I don’t know how tall of tire I can go to.

I figure (meaning, I need help here) since my tachometer is at 2000RPM at 60 MPH with taller tires I could go 65+ MPH at 1800RPM. This would be just at the low end of the power range, give me the speed to not get killed on the interstate and as a result get better gas mileage.

Questions:
Does anyone out there know what to do to tell the ECM that you are running different tire size?
Does anyone out there know the tallest tire size that can go on our trucks?
Any suggestion on whels? I'm looking for driving economy here.
Does anyone know if there is a computer program that I can run to give me MPG as I am driving? I figure I know how many pounds of fuel I have at the rail. I know the flow rate of my injectors. I know the pulse width with respect to RPM. All of this info is in DataMaster.

Can info be taken from DataMaster (or some similar program) real time, to give me MPG?

What else should I know about to do this?

Is your Typhoon stock? With my Syclone I get 25mpg at 75mph on the hwy, A/C on, with the stock size 245/50-16 tires. I'm running a 255lph fuel pump, K-B air filter kit, K-B AFPR set at 45LB, MSD-6A, MSD plug wires, NGK Iridium UR6IX part # 7348. Soon I will be trying a Ultimate Chip and I wonder what it will do to my gas mileage.

i emailed them they said that the chip doesn't effect the gas mileage.

i think if you get bigger rims like 17" the tires are lower profile and they the same size as the stockers, so you dont have to change anything to make it accurate.

you can recalibrate the drac for different tire and gear combo's. dunno how anymore bc my computer just crashed and I lost the file with that info. but suffice it to say it can be done.

why not just buy a tire/wheel setup with the same rolling diameter as the stock tires.

My Typhoon is mostly stock. The only non stock stuff is a Kenny Bell cold air, undersized crank pully, 3 bar MAP, the Ultamate chip and with stock injectors. I have my FP set at 51 pounds. The engine is a fresh rebuild last Christmas. The Trans is 2 years old. All of my tuning is done with DataMaster. It runs good and it runs strong.

The best I can do with driving the Highway and keeping better than 10 puonds of vacuum is 17MPG. I was hoping for 23 with taller skinner tires.

I would use the money that you have for rims and tires to get a beater. My old job I had TY#1354 and didn't want to beat it up by driving 120miles a day, so I saved a little cash and bought a 1991 Toyota Tercel / 5 speed for $1,500. That little car was in good shape and got 40 miles per gallon. I was also able to store my TY in the winter and use that for a winter car. That is what I would do...

25mpg is not normal for a stock truck, the only other stock SyTy I have heard getting that would be Morgan #0180. Most of us get high teens on the highway.

As for tires you are not going to get 6mpg with new tires. The Code $59 has highway mode, that is probably at least 4 mpg with that. Code $58 using the EGR also is worth some fuel economy. My father has fooled around with gas mileage over the years, so I will pass on some of his reasonable mods...

If the engine runs hotter it will get better gas mileage as well, a 195 thermostat instead of a 160 will help. (I have electric fans and can control my coolant temp, it makes 1mpg difference, electric fans also make 1 mpg difference as well) If you have an IC scoop, I would remove it, even the rubber deflector. Block most of the grill with plexiglass. You will have to fool around to see what your cooling, in the cold winter my father almost completely blocks his grill 2' x 8" gap. This one usually will make a few mpg difference and our truck have a relatively large grill opening to begin with.

My intution says, if you did all of the above it would get high 20's on the highway for gas mileage.

110% With Deano here.....use the money to buy the ugliest Civic or Tercel you can. You are in TX where cars do not rust out and go back to nature like they do in the Northeast, so finding a 1992 Civic or something for $500 that has a kicked-in quarter panel and different colored doors shouldn't be too tough. I had a 1992 Civic LX 5-speed that got 40mpg all day every day, and I could milk it to 43-44 if I wanted to drive like a little girl. Keep the miles off the Ty.

buy a crx, 45+mpg for under $2500. I drive 40miles each way, each day. Have fun.

check that, civic would be cheaper, find a brown four door no one wants.

Re: Good News + Bad News = Fuel Economy Question.

I bet you can buy a cheap beater car that gets good mpg for about the same money youre going to spend on wheels. Example....When I was driving 75 miles a day to work and back I bought a '95 Mercury Mystique for $1000. It wasnt the best looking car but it got 34 mpg. I sold it for $1000 after I drove it for over two years.

so your getting 500 miles per tank? if so...that's amazing. i get about 330-350 on the highway. the $59 code is definitely helping me...but not that much!

I have absolutely no idea what code $59 and code $58 means. Will you please explain or point me to the definition.

Also, the discussion about the beater: So you guys are saying that for stock steel blazer truck wheels and 180x78x15s will run me around $1000 for 5 (Gotta include a spare)? I was figuring good used tires and salvage wheels. I was figuring $250.00 for some ugly wheels and tires (i'll send some pictures later). That has to beet buying some beater and insurance for it. The safty inspection expense and all of those other expenses that come with owning a car.

Re: Good News + Bad News = Fuel Economy Question.

code $59 is the new ECM/chip code being developed by a few very gracious folks. it allows for closed loop operation at other AFR's besides 14.7, therefore allowing the truck to run leaner in cruise/low load situations. it should allow everyone to tune for better fuel mileage and better driveability.

Last time I filled up I went 397 miles on 15.5 gallons. My vacuum reading at 75mph level ground runs 22" Look over these test readings from my post and feel free to respond on that posting as I don't want to :hijack:.

one word - beater.

get a beater, i dont think there are many sytys that i would drive 60+ miles to and from work everyday not be a little nervous about. gas isnt cheap so mileage is important. the mileage difference would be more than enough to cover the extra cost of some pos on your insurance policy.
