Got me a Ty

Well my girlfriend's mom's cousin bought his 93 Ty brand new and for some reason decided he had to part with it. Of course he babied it but then a few years ago he let his wife use it as a daily driver and she neglected it. It's got a couple of dings, missing the driver's side fender cladding, leaks oil and antifreeze and the steering is sloppy with 133,000 miles on it. The inside smells like a pet store as it was used for hauling the family dogs around but it runs pretty stong and of course is fast as hell. They kept asking me if I was interested in it and I just blew them off not knowing what it was. After about a month I was told that if I was at all interested that I needed to call him right away because he wanted it gone soon. His wife passed away about 5 years ago and I guess he was just keeping it around because she had been driving it and couldn't let it go and then something in him switched and he wanted it gone. Maybe it was a closure thing, I don't know. I did a little research and knew that I had to have it and get a small taste of what so many of you have known for years. I remember when I was 16 I worked at a full service car wash and a Syclone came through and every guy there was tripping over themselves about the Sy. I didn't know then what a big deal it was and had never even heard of a Typhoon until about six weeks ago. Considering I sold auto parts for three years when I was a teenager in the early 90's I was surprised that it slipped by me. I had a 1991 Toyota 4runner that I used as a second car and to bounce around town and haul junk. I was planning on driving it into the gound and it had over 200k on it and was still going strong. When I came across the Ty I had to let my 4runner go to make room in the garage for the Ty. It took me only about 10 seconds to decide to let it go. I'm not sure I'm comfortable saying what I paid for it but I will say I got a hell of a deal as I was able to use the money from selling an old beat up 91 4runner to pay for my Ty and have enough left over for tie rod ends and title transfer. I brought it home on Jan 20th and the last 4 numbers on the VIN are 0314 so I'm guessing that's my new favorite number. It appears to be bone stock with the exception of a chip and he was nice enough to give me the original chip he still had on a shelf in the garage. White on Black #314 of #2200 and she's all mine.

Don't be shy about the price, good deals are always excellent to hear about, lets us know that once in a lifetime deals still exist! :D

Re: Got me a Ty

Cool, welcome the club. Sounds like a bit of work is ahead. On my Sy the oil leak was the pan gasket and the water leak was 3 of the 4 freeze plugs on the side of the block. I can tell you that they can be changed with motor in the truck. Bit of a job though.:squint: There's an amazing amount of info and help here. Ask and you will receive as the saying goes.

:welcome:

The coolant leak doesn't seem too serious. There is that second radiator that is angled on the bottom. ( I'm assuming this is for the intercooler on the turbo) I may be a moron. There is a small round plastic housing near the bottom center of that radiator and that appears to be where the coolant leak is coming from. What is that small round/cylandar shaped piece. Is is some sort of pump? Kind of reminds me of a window washer pump. I'm guessing there is some sort of hairline crack in it and that's where it's leaking. Doubt I'm lucky enough to have it be a loose hose clamp.

The oil is probably a little more serious. It's pretty filthy on the bottom half of the engine. It looks like what you would expect for 133,000 miles. The top end is fairly clean though. I can smell a little oil burning on the exhaust at stop lights. (I've driven this all of about 10 miles so far) I doubt I'm lucky enought to get away with replacing valve cover gaskets and that's it. Besides the top wouldn't be that clean if the valve cover gaskets were leaking that much. It leaves too much oil on the garage floor for it to be just that. It leaves a spot about 3-4 inches in diameter. It doesn't seem to be coming directly from either side of the crank so maybe it is a pan gasket but who knows what path the oil is traveling from the engine to the cement. I've had rear main seals leave oil puddles that looked like crime scenes before. Hopefully it's not the rear main seal. I work slow and don't want my new Ty torn apart for that long. I just got it.

It's definately not my daily driver. Just something to ride around in. My 4 runner was a daily driver up until last July then it too became a very reliable weekend vehicle. I can tell already that the Ty is not going to be hassle free. But who cares I feel like I joined a brotherhood.

Sounds like your talking about the intercooler pump.. if so i'd look into fixing that leak asap and stay on top of the level of coolent in the upper ic if it is leaking.

Also you might want to check to see if that pump is even running, most factory pumps fail rather quickly and don't really move any fluid to help keep the intercooler cool at all.. it's a standard thing to do when owning a syty to upgrade your ic pump asap. Do a search on ic pump and y ou'll see tons of info and experiences.

Good luck

Believe it or not I was able to come to that same conclusion with a Chilton's manual and a little googling. Where's a good place online to look for aftermarket intercooler pumps? It looks like I can pull the relay and use a jumper wire to find out if the pump even is working and no I won't be driving it until I get this fixed. Too easy of a repair to neglect and cause all kinds of turbo damage.

You should hot-wire the ic relay to run the pump all the time to help prevent the ic from heat soaking.. it's a common mod for our trucks and has no ill effects plus once you do that you can turn the key to the on position and check for voltage at the pump to ensure your getting powr to the pump and to confirm that the pump is beat. here's a write up on it http://www.sytyarchives.com/howto/viewarticle.php?article_name=ic_pump_hotwire.php&dir=engine

I don't remember part numbers since Im no longer using pumps but I used a jabsco.. I think for the money you can get a shurflo or johnson pump which flows more then the jabsco for the same price and flows twice if not more then the factory pump did.
