Governor R&R walkthrough

I just checked out my governor gear due to hard shifting so I thought I would share the experience. The gov. is on the driver side of the trans just forward of the prop shaft/transfer case connection. It's covered with a press fit cap that looks like a center cap from a Torque Thrust type wheel.

You can get the gov. out without removing or dropping the trans but I had to take off the propshaft. Disconnect the front of the prop shaft then remove the top 2 bolts at the rear of the prop. Turn prop 180 degrees and remove the other 2 bolts. I used a long, thin flat head screwdriver and a brass hammer to pry out the gov. cap a bit then switched to a long, thick screwdriver to finish the job. The cap is a press fit but mine was RTV'd as well. Have a bucket on hand for the niagra falls of tranny fluid that will flow out, a large fluid tray will work even better becasue the fluid will spread out along the trans. x-member.

The gov. slips right out. press/tap out the small pin that holds the gear on and take the gear off. Now, there is a barbell/valve lengthwise inside the gov. shaft. Hold the gov. by the weights with the gear side down, the valve should be in the gov. shaft. Release/ relax your grip on the weights and the barbell/valve should drop out where the gear was. If not, just insert a small screwdriver between the weights and lightly pry the top of the barbell/valve down towards where the gear was mounted. It should now come out.

There is a small hole in the bottom/gear side of the barbell/valve. There is another very small hole at a 90 degree angle to the shaft about a centimeter up the barbell/valve. Spray some carb cleaner in the end hole and it should spray out the side hole, if not keep trying until it does. Now, scotchbrite the barbell/valve, spray with more carb cleaner, and reinstall into the gov. shaft. Make sure the barbell/valve slides freely in and out of the shaft when actuating the weights.

Reinstall gear and pin, reinstall gov. into trans. When putting the gov. cover back on push the top side of the cover all the way in and tap the bottom of the cover to seat. If you can get the cover to go on like that you won't have to pull the transfer case brace. Reinstall the prop shaft. Hopefully this helps someone else out, in depth tech seems severely lacking on this site along with dead links like a mutha. Good luck,

Larry

Re: Governor R&R walkthrough

Excellent walk through!

tough to read all rambling together but I am sure it will help someone out.
I know recalibrating the gov weights is on my list of things to tackle so this helps me with one area of that chore.

I have some notes form other owners on switching out the weights and springs and how those effect the shift points.

there is no firm, do this and this will be the result.
It is more of a trial and error testing of weight / spring combination that gets you to the shift point you want.

Shift points can be greatly effected by converter swaps as well as significant changes in the turbo, spool up response time.

So did cleaning out the governor resolve your hard shift issues?

Hopefully you tried adjusting the TV cable first before going through all that work.

Thanks again, your efforts are not for nothing.

And I have an excellent word doc with pics of the B&M governing your governor article as well as cliff notes of other users experiences with modifying theirs.
If you want a copy pm me your email addy.

Re: Governor R&R walkthrough

Thanks for the tip Loeryder, I spaced it out for easier reading. I didn't try the TV because I couldn't get mine to adjust. I bought a new one but it is a little short according to George Blake but I will try it if this doesn't work. I think he specs 56" while the one I got is only 52.4" long. Any ideas on where to get a TV cable these days since Prime Gears went tits up?

This wasn't that big of a deal honestly, but I just buttoned up a diff. swap and full steering R&R. I appreciate your offer but if I keep this truck I will likely go with an LS motor and a 4l80E swap. I just can't see trying to do anything with the stock type powertrain and have anything live (except the transfer case of course). I've worked on alot of "performance" vehicles but these trucks take the award for biggest cluster **** easily. After I get everything buttoned up I'd like to just get rid of it, but the market sucks as everyone knows.

Maybe you should post up what you have regarding the governor. I'm sure someone will be looking for it in the future.

Re: Governor R&R walkthrough

I can swap the governor on a ty in less about 2 minutes, must have done it on the 700 over 20 times. The more you do it, the better you get. I don't remove propshaft , use a large screwdriver to pop the cover off and a small ballpeen hammer to tap the cover back on, don't use force, use ther weigth of the hammer and you wrist.

Great tips guys. I probably wouldn't have had to remove the propshaft if my cover wasn't RTV'd on but extra work seems to be the norm for this truck, lol.

Hey me too!! denny's right on getting that sucker out! I jack the drivers side frame up(use jack stands) use a long chisel and a small hammer and it comes off almost just looking at it!
