GP on carbon fiber hoods!

Okay...I talked to VIS out of Cali five minutes ago. Chris at VIS (909-595-3027) told me he can make us one style hood. Each hood will cost $450-500 plus shipping. The lead time depends on how fast we can get a core hood to him to replicate. 6-8 weeks later we should have the hoods. We need at least 15 hoods and wants 30% down to begin the project. They currently make the hoods for the 2nd generation trucks found on eBay. After this deal goes through smoothly I will be asking him about the tailgates as well.

I want the 2" cowl hood design! Anyone else?

That link has the shipping at $150 so are we going to be in the $600-$650 range with shipping? Just wanted to be sure because $150 could swing some people. I would tentatively be interested, but again $650 is alot to me to drop for a hood, even if it is carbon fiber, which I love. Oh and 2" cowl would be the way to go, no point in making it stock, because if your going to custom make a hood, you might as well get the most benifit out of it as possible.

I'm afraid getting 15 is probably going to be a stretch also, unless a vendor or two ordered a handfull to sit on till smeone wanted one, I don't know. Also depending on price I would be in for a C/F tailgate also. But then again you run into more problems because you need at least two design's Sy and Ty and then you got shaved handle and no shaved handle.

Maybe for me, I am also in cali. Maybe i can pick it up. And a 2" cowl would be nice as long as the cowl was patterned after the goodmark style. If so you can count me in. Paul Z.

A little too late!!! 650 is a good deal. You can spend that much on a goodmark hood and paint.

He told me it would cost $400-500 to ship 15 hoods to one location. We would have to figure it out from there. $576.66 shipped is not a bad price since no one else will make these hoods for us. Vendors step up $6,400.00 for 15 hoods shipped ($426.00 each). Not to mention the Goodmark donor hood would also need to be provided in Cali.

You could always sell the hood after and recoop most of the money, plus you could be real nice and ship all these out for everyone since your just down the street :D

I'm sure if someone from Cali would step up and go and meet this guy we could probably get a better deal on the price. Maybe show him the actual hood we want...hint hint.

If you do that then there should be no problem getting the 15 needed.. I wish this came a long five months back when I had dough.. oh and I got my goodmark hood for $259.99 plus 100 freight about two years ago :)

Re: GP on carbon fiber hoods!

Hey guys,
I just want to mention before it too late, that if VIS is still having all of their hoods farmed out from China...that the hoods will indeed be made from Polyester resins and of course fiberglass with one visable layer of CF. I'm not bashing their work.....just informing you of what is common knowledge amoungst the industry.
We all know the shifting properties of these materials, shrinking ,warping and texture print-through that seems to never end.
Their fit and finish aren't bad....its just the limitations of the materials utilized.Repainting or reclearing every few years will be needed to avoid that degrading finish. More if its in the sun alot.
I'm not posting this to detract from buyers on the list, just helping some of you be informed and leveling expectations.
I wish I could have managed a Goodmark before now.....my molds would have been completed and we could have controlled the lay-up schedule and resins to our own needs. But alas.. :squint:
...............Vinny

Wait, you saying you would be able to do this yourself, and have it be proper, all carbon fiber construction? How can I help?

Werd. Im interested in a carbon fiber hood. Not for the look, but for the weight savings. It will be painted black anyway.

Guys.....I don't want to defuse this thread selfishly. Shouldn't this be talked about elsewhere ?
That way, those who wish to persue the fiberglass/cf VIS version can do so without irritation and thread highjack. Its my assumption, that most buyers would only pay for a replica CF hood anyways( per above). Thats one of the main reasons a full Carbon and Epoxy/Vinylester hybrid has been kind of kept on the down-low for us. That,,,and it will of course be more costly to build, but be stronger and lighter..But will last the heat and endure the Suns UV rays without ill effects.
I've currently got worx in the process for IVANKOBARBELL's project racer. My hold off has been because he wants a stock hood with a fresh air NACA duct. The designs I've come up with are not pleasing me ....utilitarian track looking.
I personally want the 2" cowl CF too. Its just costly making additional top molds per each design change. I also make my molds from Epoxy for warp/twist avoidance.Keeps surface finish best too.

Re: GP on carbon fiber hoods!

?? why not just get a glass hood from VFN it's 13lbs - i know the cf hood i had was about 6lbs.

Is it really worth the effort to save 7lbs. if so it might be easier to go on a Diet.

If it's for the look of CF that hell yea that's the way to go
