Ground cable on back of pass side cyl head???

Im chasing some tuning/electrical probs on another sy and found a large ground wire disconnected near the back of the pass side cyl head (between firewall and eng).

I cant locate this ground on my prints (schematics) and am curious if anyone knows if its tied into the ECM directly or what it supplies.

It is prolly a 4 gauge cable and looks to have been bolted to the back of the head at one time..

TIA for any info.

my dad's also has this, its near imposible to find where that strap is supposed to go, but the shop re-installed it by bolting it onto the bracket that holds the map sensor.

It bolts directly to the head in the back. Start at the back of the head and move towards the middle of the block.

I got at it with a stubby wrench (you'll need a 9/16") and moving the main wiring harness outta the way with the other hand. On my truck it wanted to pass right over the hole for the ground strap and not lay anywhere else. Move that harness over and I'll bet you will feel the hole.

Good luck and HTH!

Thanks guys... I was gonna bolt it back there but wanted to find out what it supplied too. I had it connected temporarily with a clip lead (jumper wire) to the frame (truck has a rear batt kit).

I got some weird stuff going on with this truck and really fealt it was electrical. Redid/all the grounds and it seems to be behaving some now but its not like I want it yet.

Have been so far as putting a oscilloscope on the ECM to see if I had RFI or something. Well, its no worse than myclone so I doubt thats it... Just cant get rid of a tip in stumble now..

ANYWAY, back to the subject can someone verify that the cable I found is the main ground to the eng from the battery??

TIA..

That one you speak of (black cable from battery, 2-4 ga., covered with convo tubing) is supposed to go to the front-most intake manifold bolt on the pass. side.
I was looking at the manual, trying to figure out how to put all this STUFF back on my truck and that is where it shows it going.

If you have moved the battery, then you should have a ground from the frame to the engine, usually on the front of the passenger head/a/c bracket and the ground on the back of the head is for the body, if it is by itself and doesn't disappear into a harness. Take a volt meater and put the one lead on the engine and the other on the body, frame, ect. and see if you get any voltage readings with the lights on, engine running, a/c heater blower on high, ect... If you do, you have a ground path problem...If you need schematics, let me know....Steve.

Thanks Steve.. Ive got schematics.. Ive checked for voltage drops, bad connections, etc. Less than .5v drop front to rear.

Ive found some things.. Some helped and some didnt. Don wanna send this truck back to the owner still broke. Just an ego thing I guess.

Hey myclone,
Try running a ground from the battery directly to the engine...I've never tried it on my Sy but it worked for my Buick: a 00 welding cable from the trunk to the block...it solved my slow- cranking problem. HTH
