Head Gasket Repair

Hello everyone, Im new here to the site and just had my Syclone # 0011 delivered to me a couple days ago. Unfortunately I have not got to expierience the full potential of this truck due to some issues it's having right now :( . My first question is how much does it usually cost to have the head gaskets replaced on a Syclone? And I was wondering if there was anyone here that lives close to Greensburg, Indiana. that works on these trucks and could possibly take a look/ fix it.

Thanks

Well first welcome to the site. Now let us know what's going on that you need those gaskets replaced. I haven't done it and we don't know your level of expertise. But time is the big ingredient. I would consider doing mine today but right after I got my truck, no way. Many of us are more brave than others.:rotf:

I am no mechanic at all...lol. The truck was only set @ 5 or 6 lbs of boost due to what I believe ( and was told ) was the need for a good tune/new chip. Anything over or around 10 psi and I would get sputtering and hesitation. When I got the truck it was set around 18 psi and I found out immediatly that there was no way that was going to happen so I just cleaned all the filters and kept turnin' the boost down untill it was at least drivable. I sold my daily driver to get it so I have been babying the truck since the first time I drove it fearing that something could go wrong if I drove it hard and I would be hitchin' rides to work. I had coolant running out down around the drivers side head and I assume that it's the gasket, although someone told me it could possibly be the lower intake gasket? I really just need it checked out by a mechanic but I don't want to get screwed so I was wondering what this repair should cost if that's the problem.

Thanks

I am no mechanic either. I was able to do a top end/ 80e build. I wont lie, It was hard but with all the help here it can be done. Most the work is just remove and replace. I thought of just removing everything and have a guy come over and install the heads and I would replace everything myself. I ended up pulling the engine did everything myself.. Did the motor mounts too. I had a few snags but I figured out what they were.

Re: Head Gasket Repair

what all is done to the truck? stock sytys don't normally kill head gaskets which is why im asking. I'd take closer look to see where exactly the leak is at first before mentioning head gasket to a corner mechanic.. he'll just see $$$ where it might just be something simple or a freeze plug etc

I am about 1 hour away...I'd take a look for you. But I cant do it till probably next Friday 24th I believe. I actually drive through greensburg several times a week, but cant do it on company time, so I'd have to do it on a day off. My dad has been wanting to check out the Ironhorse cafe there in town, maybe we'll ride up there Friday......lemme know if that works for you.

I have a reciept from 9 years ago that says an R&R engine installed with forged pistons and HP rods from a place called Dynotech Performance in NJ ( I am assuming the same engine is in there but I don't know for sure ). Seller told me that the turbo was a 20g upgrade ( not sure about that yet though). Aftermarket KB intercooler, Arizona Speed and Marine TB, turbonetics wastegate and a catless DP with flowmaster.KB Prom Selectable Paq ( which is coming out immediately ...yuk  ).

Thanks for your help.

I'm doing a head swap right now, same amount of work as a head gasket swap, its a huge job for sure! I definitely wouldn't attempt it unless you felt confident in your mechanic skills.

If you take it somewhere, make sure it is some place that comes highly recommended and that you trust a LOT!! They will be totally disassembling your engine (down to the shortblock).

fyi, i believe this is cartman007's old truck.. it was in florida and it was known to have a blown head gasket.. its not impossible to fix.. but not easy either.. anyhow, big mistake selling your daily driver for a heavily modified syclone even if it has low miles..

I'd find you a daily driver, backup at least until you KNOW everything about your truck.

A $400 car as backup and better than standing on side of road with thumb in the air hitching a ride to the autoparts store or work.

Thanks for reminding me of that... HAD to sell m daily driver btw, to get this truck. I will be getting something else to drive but I was going to drive this this truck 'till about October and then get something else to drive daily then park her for a weekend/show truck. Yes, this truck did belong to a guy in Fl. but let's not even go there because you don't know the whole story and I don't want to drag it on to the forums ...what's done is done and I just need to deal with the problem at hand and move forward. I got a quote from the local GMC service dept. today to fix it for $1150 and that's with me supplying the head gaskets. This truck also has Prompaq on it, and MBC, I want to remove both these items as I am going with an ultimate chip and wondering if I just need to put the stock boost controller back on then pull the prompaq and install the Ultimate chip.

lol.... actually, my wife has a Toyota Corolla. And my good friend/ neighbor works at the same place and same shift as I do, so I have a ride to work. I had an old Ranger that I drove to work an did my general runnin' around town in but I sold it to pay to have the Sy shipped and cover some other expenses...I'm not stranded or anything (yet) ;) ...lol.

I know I'm probably not supposed to say this here but have some parts to sell and I can't post in the classifieds...I e-mailed the administrator and can't get a response.

as for the whole story, if you search on here there is LOTS of information about this truck.. I hope he informed you that it did have a blown head gasket before attempting to sell it to you..

other than that, the truck looked nice, shame it had so much done to the engine and it didn't hold together.

Yes, it's a shame. But like I said, what's done is done. Just want to get her running and then start fixing her up for meets/shows etc...

Re: Head Gasket Repair

I am also contemplating doing my head gasket myself. I dont have much experience, the biggest job Ive done on my syclone is change the injectors, and that took me 5 hours.
Should I feel confident going the rest of the way and taking off my heads, or is that when it gets hard and more involved?
P.S sorry for hijacking your thread, but this might help us both.

Re: Head Gasket Repair

go to the projects section and read Tooky's thread about his head swap.

injectors - heads is a big stepo but not impossible. Just will take you time and some research!

I've been a mechanic most of my life. Got the engine out of my Typhoon today in under 3 hours. If your not far from Chicago i can take care of it for you. Done head gaskets on several trucks, including mine own.

Re: Head Gasket Repair

WOW, Tooky's thread is awsome. It is definatly a reality check though. I dont have the knowledge or patience to sucessfully complete a job like that. I really wish I did. I'll just have to put in the extra hours at my day job and pay the big bucks :(
