Head Studs or Bolts

I was just wondering what most of you guys are running and which you perfer. I am leaning more towards the studs because all the presure is not on the block. The only draw back would be that with the studs there probably isn't much chance of pulling the heads off in the truck (clearing all the crap) but if you have to pull the heads of in our trucks more then likely the motor is coming out

i just used those new arp bolts they are suppose to be 30 percent stronger than studs,my builder has had good luck on big blown stang motors with them .

arp claims these new bolts are stronger than studs,ill have to get the part numbers

the newest ARP studs can be installed in the truck as the new ones now have allen keyways in the tops so they can be used for just this reason.

It's not a matter of strength, it's all about clamping force. A stud has better clamping force because all of the torque is vertical (through the stud) and not wasted in the threaded area of the bolt via friction (the bolt actually twists upon torquing) A stud is a more even and consistent fastner in any application, but will a good ARP bolt work? Yes for sure.

Like jwaller said, the new studs have allen heads so they can be removed easily in the truck...............and remember the studs should only be put in finger tight into the block.

Two good books to read about this are written by Corky Bell.
Both superchargers and turbos are covered. Im sure most of you know about them, but nonetheless are good sources of info. Most common bookstores.

Second this all the way! Just to add for those that are unaware, the studs that are "wet" (the holes go into coolant or water passages) should be sealed with non-hardening thread sealer. Even with sealer and the non-allen type studs they can be installed and removed by using two brass jam nuts to assist and won't damage the threads on the studs but remember.... finger tight only like Mark said! We have been doing this for years on vehicles with installation and removal clearance problems :tup: .

Do you guys feel that it is ok to reuse head studs or not? I have them in my truck now and wondered if they are ok to use again. Thanks

No problem, as long as they are not damaged or have been over torqued.

I use the arp studs with the alen key head...But there a bitch to remove....I went through 2 allen key and ended up stripping out one of the studs when I had to remove the head because of some valve train broblems. fotunately the stud was axcessable with a pair of vice grips otherwise I would of had to pull the motor.

I would still recomend the ARP studs..

Some bolts are torque to yield applications and shouldnt be re used. I believe the Ls1 motors use these.
Once the bolts become stretched to thier limits, its not agood idea to reuse them.
Just like leafspring u-bolts, once their maxed they' ll snap a second time around.
