The string bands from south phiily. I didn't realize you lived so far from the city!!!!! You never saw a New Years parade?

a mummer is what the call a very large group of people in philly that have formed differnt groups of musicians.

they dress in all sorts of get ups and on new years day they parade down
the main drag thru philadelphia. THe bands also compete with one another. Heck they even sell it on video now.

they also strut and walk funny while they do this.

the reason for the strutting is this all began around 1900+ or - a few years.

on new years eve the drunks would be leaving the bars and being so drunk they couldnt walk for shit. and the struting down broad street thing kinda grew into the parade that it is today.

Well at least thats the way the legend was told to me when i 1st moved here.

so while you guys see the rose bowl parade and probably the one outta ny we also get the mummers besides on new years day.
