Ok, so here's the story. This guy came to me with a blown up truck, he bought it with a fresh rebuild, and I won't mention the name, but they are well known. Block was toast and we had to find a new block and crank. These days, authentic Sy/Ty block are hard to find and take awhile. I agreed to start the project before this person even had the cash for the deposit. Young guy, only car, little money, so I agreed. First mistake. Anyway, after awhile, I had the motor ready to go in, and here another truck comes in with a blown motor (another big name) and when I tear it down to check it out, find that the wristpin circlip is blown out of it's bore. This was with the new style TRW piston. They had changed from using inner snap-rings to round wire retainers. Documents said it was a better, stronger design but I dunno. After seeing this one fail, I take it to two machine shops who say it is a crappy design, and If I have any other pistons like it, I shouldn't use them in these turbo motors. I've got six sets on the shelf, crap! A call to TRW is met with sceptiscism, but I send one to them for their "review" Meantime I'm looking for an alternative piston. Customer then calls me to say that Detroit turbo has ones they say will work. I get the part number off their site and call JE. Steve Barber there (714-898-9763) says SRP #139632 is not recommended for more than 11 psi. Hmmm.... DT doesn't know this, or doesn't care. I'm not gonna use them. Now mind you, I could have used pistons I have on the shelf, (or DT's) but instead of building a motor with what I believe to be questionable components I advise the customer to wait for the custom slugs I order from JE (and I absorb the extra cost)
So the dude gets on here and says I lied? WTF? I e-mailed him and told him I talked to JE, Not DT. I've never talked to them, don't know them. I only deal direct with JE for fitment and application advice. I deal through one of their distributors. JE supports their distributors by selling higher direct. No-brainer. So yeah, I haven't ordered direct since I figured this out in 99. If this guy had given me the courtesy of calling me if he thought I lied, I could have explained that.
Bottom line is I could build motors faster If I didn't care about them lasting. After all there is no warranty, I COULD just take my money and run. But I do care. So If it takes a long time, we both get hurt- customer is without the truck, and I'm not getting paid. Explain to me why I'd take longer than I have to, when the deposit I get doesn't even cover all the parts. I'm out-of-pocket at the time of delivery. The balance covers the rest of the parts and my profit. I even have to pay to store the truck while we are waiting.
So it's been said that like 3 guys have complained on this forum. Wow, whether they were right to or not, that's a pretty good percentage. I've been in business full time for ten years and had literally hundreds of Sy/ty's come though here. Don't think I'd be around if I was such a bad guy, do you?
