High performance front brakes

I'm about to install a coil over front suspension on my TY. while I'm at it I'd like to put big brakes up front and disc brakes in the back. I'm looking for suggestions. I'v seen the setup that puts late model Camaro brakes on the front but I'm not convenced that Baer, Wilwood or SSBC might not be a better installation. What do you think?

I'm waiting on the new Baer 6P system with 14" rotors to get back from the plating shop (I ordered them months ago). I'm kinda the test mule for this new system in our trucks. I'll be sure to put up tons of pictures and comments on how this system works once they're ready...

Sounds good I'll be looking for your post. Thnx Chuck

Re: High performance front brakes

What practical difference is there really going to be between any of these systems?

In my experience road racing both the stock and 12" LS1 CBR camaro front brakes, the primary difference by far, was the availability of a true $200 race pads and SPECIFICALLY the dramatically increased fade resistance for extended duration road racing (20 minute sessions) when using those pads.

Here's a video of me squealing around Turn 12 at Road America.

On the street in daily driving scenarios, I barely noticed any difference from the 12" LS1 brakes vs the stockers. I would say I noticed a bigger difference in brake pedal "feel" when I did the ABS Delete than when I did all the work to upgrade the brakes (and boy oh boy, what a job that was!)

So am I missing something here? Are these front brake upgrades just for looks or "peace of mind", or is there more to it?

Well I'm not planning to go road racing. I would like a better "feel". I to have done a ABS delete and noticed an improvement in braking. However I have had on occasion hauled my TY down from numbers over 100mph and I came away thinking the brakes could be improved. That said I don't get above 100mph very often. I hate to here my wife screeming.
and I'm an old fart that probably should stick to the right lane, but I'm still just a bit crazy

Re: High performance front brakes

Hey Tooky I know when we put the 13" C5 on the front of my dads ty and the 12" Ls1 on the rear we took it for a little spin and when he hit the brakes I could feel my stomach come up:D

Couple days later I ordered all the parts to do that same setup on mine but I got the better rotors etc.

Also put those ls1 12" on the front of my brothers grand prix and he said his car stops soo much better than factory.

Not sure if you got some crappy parts or if your stock brakes were just that good but I know for a fact the the c5 make you stop quick:tup:

Re: High performance front brakes

The stock brakes on sy/tys are terrible for how fast they are from the factory, they are the same as a normal s10 blazer, the first major upgrade I did to my typhoon before any go fast parts was to upgrade the brakes. I first went with the ssbc calipers that bolt into the stock spindle. I didnt notice any difference, waste of money. So I bought some CBR Fbody calipers and rotors, BIG difference in stopping power, best mod I did to the truck imo, makes it 10x better to drive.

Re: High performance front brakes

To be honest, I'm primarily doing it for looks, initially. It's just another step toward my goal of creating a truck that can compete with the likes of most supercars in all areas, from straight-line acceleration to handling, etc...

I'll eventually get the truck out to some track days, and I like the idea that the system has the flexibility to convert to track-ready if desired. What I also like about the 6P system is that it will accept any OEM or aftermarket pads designed for the C6 Z06.

I usually do track outings with a local exotic timeshare group, and it would be fun to be able to take my truck out there and toy around with cars 10x my truck's value (although I'm closing that monetary gap pretty fast with all this Bowtie stuff). :)

Some vids of our track days here: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=BuntingVideo

From what I've experienced, the first thing to go on these exotics during a track day are the brakes. About 75% of the time we have to retire a car early because of it. The only exception being the Porsches, which will run out of tyres before loading them back into the trailer.

From Baer at least, the rear disc options are limited to beefier rear-ends than our stock setups, so there really hasn't been a rear kit designed to compliment the 6P fronts on a stock truck as of yet. So I can either wait for an adapted kit, or go get a stronger rear end (better option but once again, expensive). Until then it's 14" rotors with 6P calipers up front and drums in the back... :D

Re: High performance front brakes

I have 13" C5 calipers, zr1 rotors on front of mine, ls1 rear discs.

~550hp, I pull up to the line, hit the brakes and they hold. No double stomping brakes, no worry about building pressure, no hydroboost needed, nothing.

Stopping is also greatly improved. I know feel my foot movement is limited by my bodies ability to handle it, not a mechanical limit. Not done any endurance stuff yet.

I have c5 front with Hawk pads, powerslot rotors, and SSBC tri piston calipers, the rear is camaro 12 inch, ABS deleted the truck will stop and stop hard, I pretty much beat the hell out of the brakes for the first few weeks to "test them" Im very very happy, Next up hydro boost as I dont like the way the current booster looks

Re: High performance front brakes

I kinda agree with Tooky. The stock brakes work surprisingly well for the crappy/small/single piston design that they are.

I have 2nd gen dual piston front brakes + hydroboost and it works OK but not that much better than stock.

If I recall correctly you can stand on the brake pedal of a stock ABS delete truck and lock up the wheels at about any speed. What more do you really need?

Heat soak, I know when my truck was stock the 1st stop was OK from high speed, after that I felt I was playing to lotto.

Your other option would be to buy a kit for an upgraded rear diff and then take it to a fab shop and have them just make you brackets for your current rear diff.

Ah, OK.. That I can believe. I never tried repeat hard braking with the stock stuff.

I don't know how often I be in the situation where I'll be hard braking from high speeds but I am going to put a coil over front suspension on in the next three weeks and was thinking while I had it apart I would upgrade the stopping power. I will put disks on the back but thats mostly for looks. Thnx for the input. regards Chuck

Let us know the rotor pricing for the fronts when you can. I wonder if these rotors will fit fine with the Z06 C6 six piston front calipers ??:squint:

i am confused. is Cbr still making brackets, just not all the time? is there any other option beside custom?

Re: High performance front brakes

I think the only direct fit without requiring adaptors is the SSBC Force10 sport twin (Part # A181) for around $500. I like the fact that they are aluminum thus reducing unspring weight, but the piston size is smaller than the S10 factory dual piston caliper ( Which are anchors)

Interestingly enough. SSBC makes a Force 10 super twin caliper (part A185-M) for the AWD Astro/safari , but it does not have listing for the S10/SY/TY?? This has pistons 5mm bigger than the sport twin.

I would think GM would use the same calipers???

SSBC does offer triple piston, but the price jumps to over $1500, and then you have to upgrade your rims to 17"+, -so financially the upgrade snoballs...

Perhaps Renz can re-create the CBR brackets (with their blessing) for the vette or F-body calipers. I would assume they are no longer making these adaptor brackets.

Anyone hear otherwise? -or know of a low budget aluminum caliper upgrade??
