What I mean is, can I check the serial number with gm???

checking with GM unfortunately doesn't mean shit... there were a lot of problems with dealers substituting wrong parts into syty engines and passing them off as ok... just because it looks ok on the outside doesn't mean it's ok on the inside... What exactly do you mean by can I confirm it's a syty engine??

I'm going on memory and not facts so maybe someone can fill in the blanks with facts. As I recall, GM ran out of SyTy specific crate engines at some point and started installing normal 4.3 engines as warranty replacements. I don't know what all the differences were except pistons and maybe rods or how you can determine which is which from the outside. If someone knows when they ran out of SyTy crate engines, that may be the best way to determine what you have. I think it was after '94, like maybe 96 or later. My guess would be your engine is the correct one but it's just a guess.

SyTy specific parts not including turbo or IC system:

Head Gaskets
Main Bearing Caps
Pistons
Upper/lower intake
Exhaust manifolds

oil pan might be syty specific to but don't quote me on that

Waller, Michael Hood, Green, and about 20 other folks know the info and part number by heart..

First, to check and make sure it was even MEANT to be a SyTy engine, verify the engine number (12515321), either by block casting or the little tag that is sometimes on the driver side of the block near the motor mount.

This means nothing more than it was ordered under ZR9/Z79 code. Is it correct? Without opening the engine up there's no real way to tell. Once you do open it up though, look for a few things:

- nodular iron main caps (correct) not grey iron caps (incorrect)
- hypereutectic pistons (correct) not cast iron pistons (incorrect)
- head gaskets - 14097272 (correct)

These are the major things. The longblock could only be purchased as such and would have come without oilpan, manifolds, etc.....unless all were ordered separately. I wish I could tell you a '94 block is correct, but I can't (although it most likely is). My engine was a '96 block that had the wrong head gaskets, wrong main caps, L35 heads, and the correct pistons. I blew it up (no secret - 30 psi), but it was a timebomb nonetheless.

If you need SAE literature to make a case with GM (or any other kind of literature on this matter), contact me privately. I was "cocked and ready" back when I went thru this with GM, but it didn't matter to them.

Hope this helps some. Good luck finding someone at GM who gives a damn though.

real syclone/typhoon engine or not

real syclone/typhoon engine or not

the original engine on my phoon was replaced under warranty at 3,5 k miles. the new engine had the following code on it. W11J6TPE which translates to LB4 built at the romulus plant on nov 6 at the 10th hour. glued to the front of the block was a red sticker that read TPE and under-
neath TURBO. i would believe that the coding TPE stamped into the block
indicates that it is a turbo. these numbers and letters are barely visible on
the block in front of the right valve cover. hope this info helps. john.
