how long can you drive on a torn boot?

after breaking my propshaft, i tossed in the old one i had with a torn boot. my question is, am i doing more damage by having the torn boot prop in there, or would i do more damage by not having a prop in there at all?

yes you are doing more damage to the shaft...you could probably just replace the boot, but if you let it go your probably going to need the the whole front joint. if it gets some sand or road junk in there..It Could come apart and destroy the tranny....front diff and no telling what else....

well before i put it on my friend and i packed it with wheel bearing grease, then "afro-engineered" the boot with some adhesive to try and get it to hold together hahaha it held up on a 2 hour drive, but i havent checked it recently. not to mention it vibrates like a mofo! just a lil low on funds to go out and just get another one.

I drove with a torn boot for awhile and didn't have much of an issue until I got out of the truck and stepped in a puddle and my sock got all wet.

So, is it safer to drive with no front propshaft?

I'll skip that whole other thing-

Hey man, didn't you have one of Brandon's shafts in there? I remember you already had it out once(saw the insane pics) but what happened?

We can do without your racist commentary.
I don't believe in "racist" comments, but if that's one, I guess we all had better stop talking. I don't even think that's "politically incorrect".

But that's my opinion, and perhaps I am wrong.

My buddy that had 683 new had a ripped boot experience. He went to autozone & bought a generic repair boot kit & held it to gether with wire ties. He'd pack it with grease & cruise SLOWLY to race then cruise SLOWLY back home & it'd still come off.He just kept putting new-ons on till he put a rod out the side @ 10,000 miles. He just drove it to race ...7.57 @ 91 mph. This was back in 95.
I heard Dyno-tech had a re-build kit for those ripped boots and you just send-em the shaft and they fix it and send it back.

i thought i was being politically correct?

anyway back to the topic at hand...
i just cant believe that this is such a common problem, and theres no easy fix. maybe if the boots were made out of kevlar or something stronger, there wouldnt be a problem. id like the get my other propshaft rebuilt, but dont want to spend more on the rebuild than i did for the actual shaft. anyone know a place that rebuild em cheap?

there is a repair kit offered by GM for that exact problem, i drove on a torn boot for a while and it eventually seized on me, in the middle of the mountains. it really sucked. they just get too hot when all of the grease comes flying out, i dunno how the hell wire ties would hold on a boot that is spinnig with so much centrificle force, i tried to band aid it for a while by using other cv shaft boots nothing worked,i wasnt able to find a boot small enough because when the joint is spinnig it expands and rubs on something underneath the truck. it worked for a while. thats why the factory one has a metal outside piece, the only thing i was able to find to fix the problem is a new shaft.

We might be down there in the spring doing some dyno tuning on Deans and my trucks.

What do you have done to your ride? Sy or TY?

Hmmmm, maybe just icq me, let these guys get back to thier topic.
