Re: How many people here are subject to emissions requirements?
Mine still has to go through two more times. 25+ years here is exempt.

In Ohio, you have a few options.
1. you can spend $10/year and get "collector" plates. Can be a pain in the butt, but I believe that this would be in the books as a collector vehicle in Ohio. Have not tried yet on mine.
2. If you spend $300 on emissions related repairs, you can waive it. Its only $200 if your readings get better. Not sure how strict they are on "related repairs"
I know you are not in Ohio, but thought others may find interesting.
In the UK its getting tougher than ever.
Any warning light on (incluing ABS) - will Fail
All lights have to work, Must have Amber rear indicators & rear Fog lamp or it will Fail
Headlamp aim must be correct or it will Fail.
Turn signals must flash between 60 - 120 times/min or it will Fail
Hazard flashers must work or it will Fail
Must have a side indicator/repeater fitted and be visible from 1m out from in line with rear bumper or it will Fail. I failed on this one on my first 'MOT' with the Ty.
Horn has to work or it will Fail
Windshield washers have to work or it will Fail
Windshield wipers must not have any damage and must clear screen correctly or it will Fail
Windshield cannot have any significant chips in line with the drivers line of vision or it will Fail
Seat belts have to free from any damage and must function (lock) correctly or it will Fail
Exhaust must be free from any leaks, (but sound level is somewhat subjective. I think the term used is excessive noise) or it will Fail
If first registered after Aug 92, it must have a CAT or it will Fail.
Brake lines must be free from 'excessive' corrosion (again subjective) and flexibles showing no signs of cracking, swelling or ballooning when operated or excessive corrosion on crimped ferrules or it will Fail.
Excessive wheel bearing play - it will Fail
Parking brake cables and linkage must be free from excessive rust and patent defects, or it will Fail.
Disc brakes must not be excessively scored or it will Fail.
Noticeable wear in ANY steering component (ball joints & tie rods) it will Fail.
Any splits in ANY ball joint/steering DUST BOOT it will Fail
Shocks must show no sign of leakage and also when each corner is bounced, it must dampen (stop bouncing in I think two bounces, or it will Fail.
Front CV joints must not have excessive wear or it will Fail
Front CV joint Boots must not be split or leak grease or it will Fail
Vehicle must not have any 'sharp' edges ie some Bull bars/accessories or it will Fail.
Must have rear view mirror plus two door or front fender rear view mirrors or it will Fail.
Door mirrors must fold on impact with pedestrians etc. or it will Fail.
Any Holes in a stressed body panel, It will Fail (I think being a full chassis vehicle the Ty stands up better. I dont have any yet anyway thankfully)
Service brakes have to work evenly and effectively. (being AWD most testing stations dont have 4WD rollers, so it is a trip out and road test), otherwise it will Fail
Same for parking brake.
Folding front seats must lock in place! (Dont ask about this one!!)
Must pass emissions at idle and at 2500rpm or so. I cant remember what the HC and CO levels were, but I struggled to get them down and stable and had to pull the tan/black cable to pass. I fortunately had a good guy who didn't see the warning light while it was 'passing the emissions test. There was no light when he was checking for idiot lights!
All Tires must have no sidewall damage bulges (not that you would want them to) and have a minimum of 1.6mm tread depth over 3/4 of the tires width or it will Fail.
I dont think thats everything, just what I can recall off the top of my head. UK owners have I missed anything? You guys seem to have it so hard! Its getting worse over here, they are trying to drive older vehicles off the road. We dont have a visual emisions devices though, so we can remove things like EGR valves etc, we just have to pass the sniffer test. I suppose being honest a lot of the above is how I would like to be when the kids are in - SAFE. Some things are over the top though.
