how'd you get hooked?

TYRODD

My ass. Look at it.
Re: how'd you get hooked?

About six years ago my dad had the chance to drive his buddies typhoon that he had just picked up out of AZ, said it surprised the shit out of him...couldnt believe what this "Jimmy" could do...and my dad is a huge car nut, so it seemed pretty cool that this truck stood out so much.
I wasnt even driving yet, so I could really care less about it what it could do...but it was the name that I remembered..."TYPHOON", It sounded so badass :D :rotf:

Anyways, I got my first car, an 93' Blazer and was hooked on the 1st gen s-series. Had it for a year or so and wanted something similar but way better, but never thought I'd ever find a Ty. I almost started a V8 blazer project and my dads buddy offered to sell the ty instead. Been hooked and broke ever since  :rotf:

Re: how'd you get hooked?

Circa '96...I had just sold both of my autos, relying on my GF for transportation. SERIOUSLY looking for anything to get me to work. There it was, 93 Typhoon in the local paper. I arrange for a meeting, walk into the guys garage and almost pissed on myself. There it was, solid black, polished wheels, immaculate. Bought it on the SPOT. Sold it a year later. Now SyTyJedi owns it. FF 9 years, married, no kids...sold both of my autos again. This time I pick up a Contour SVT to get around in until I can get my hands on a Syclone. Luckily JWallers had one to sell and it was headed my way. I meet him in GA and trade cash for title. Now the real FUN begins........

Saw my first Syclone and Typhoon both for sale on the front lawn of a business in Flemington NJ back in the mid 90s - knew what they were but I was fresh out of college and broke so all I could do was stop and drool over them. Fast forward to 2001 - I pull into a local Sunoco for gas for my 88 Cav Z24 and there sits a ruffed up black Typhoon - broken windshield, missing front wheel, shot exhaust. I wasn't looking for one at the time so it was pure fate. I recognized it for what it was immediately. I went into the station and worked a deal with the owner for $7k after haggling a little. Had 60k miles on it at the time - looked ruff - but everything worked on it. Owner said he got it out of the local police impound lot - it was in there for the last 6 years. Fixed the immediate problems and have been daily driving it ever since. Never left me stranded yet. Has an appetite for batteries though. Got the truck bodywork done and repainted last year and applied a complete original set of Indy decals. Now I'm afraid to drive it everyday - but I can't help myself.

Re: how'd you get hooked?

I was a junior in HS a few years back and had a pretty nice job for being a HS student and was in the market for a newer car/suv.
One day while driving with my stepdad we saw a GN on the side of the road for sale and he mentioned that they were fast cars and told me a bit about them. I did a bunch of research on the GN's but I couldnt decide on if I wanted a GN or SUV (Dodge Durango at the time..) and my stepdad then told me about Sy/Ty's and how back in the day they were extremely expensive but quick with the AWD setup.

I researched some more and got a bunch of videos off the net and I was hooked on getting a Ty. I came to this message board and saw a local meet happening in Troy, MI over at the Dustan Suspension place, so my parents drove me over there to check em out. I showed up late and didnt get to talk to anyone but I saw a Sy and Ty leaving a light there both launching and I thought it was awesome how they took off so fast and the noise of the turbo spooling. About a month after 1st learning about them, I found a nicely priced one 500 miles away so my stepdad, a friend and I went to check it out.

Seeing it in person I liked how low it was and how menacing it looked being all black. I test drove it and remember launching it out in the middle of the highway and how it snapped my head back into the seat. I did the usual checkover guide as suggested and found about everything to be in correct order and haggled the guy down some more. From there I drove it back home. On the way home I remember entering the freeway and some woman was being an ass and wasn't going to let me in so I floored it and just absolutly jumped ahead of her. There was a vette just ahead and he saw this and gave me a thumbs up.

I've had it now since July '02 and its been pretty reliable, I've put just over 10K miles on it myself, using it as a daily driver for the most part.

Amen,

"Mr. Vader, your nightmare just arrived"

Always read Car & Driver and even as a broke 3rd year MSU student I was dreaming of getting a real job and buying one. I still had the C&D article from 84 with the GN, Monte SS, and 442 hanging on my walls at home, and ended up getting a GN first (9 years ago), but enjoy the TY 10 times more.

Got invited to a GMC test drive - Let you drive a Sonoma GT & a SY, then you got to ride shotgun with a pro driver in a TY.

After that, it wuz pure lust...

Re: how'd you get hooked?

Bought a mint GN in 1992 in S. California. Used if for cruise nights and shows. (Became obsessed with having a GN when friend let me drive his in Hollywood, circa 1988...one look at the LED boost gauge and the pull of the engine, I was hooked). Stock GN's were rare in SoCal and I was often the only Turbo Regal at car shows. Got involved with Buick Club (BCA) and BGNRA...dad was always a Buick guy and car guy.

Moved east in 2001...had to sell GN for a variety of reasons. But I would see TR's just about every day...not as rare here. Saw virtually no SyTy's...but have been familiar with them...friends in SoCal, Turbo V6 world, etc.

Lurking on SyTy.net since 2001. Started shopping for Ty over a year ago...just never found the right one. (Didn't want black again!!) After Hooters in December and my first substantial experience with Syclones, I shifted my search...and at the time, there were more Syclones on the market that fit my needs, budget, etc. Mid-Feb, picked up stock 43k Syclone. Will be showing the truck this spring and summer around Mont Co. and Bucks County PA..."representin'!" Back in Black!

Buying the '93 Ty new was my revenge on my Ex-husband for trading off my pristine 87 GN for a Silverado. Nothing sweeter than the taste of revenge..now I have my Ty and a 86 GN and another husband, lol!

Re: how'd you get hooked?

All these stories are great. I don't own a syty yet, but plan on it. My first vehicle was an 82 s15. I got it free from my dad who had driven it 16-17 years as a DD. I loved that truck, I ended up selling it for $150. It was falling apart, rust everywhere, huge oil leak. I hear the new owner loves it. Oh well. I then bought a mint 85 s10 which now has a little accident on the driver rear cab corner, a bent bumper, and because of the winter and cold start-ups it now needs a new engine. About a year ago I really started to get into the s-seris craze. I was looking on the net one day and I saw a syclone but had no idea what it was. I didn't really bother to find out. I saw it again a few weeks later and then i researched them and was amazed. About a month after that I discovered the Typhoon. Since I live in Sask, Canada I will probally never see one or get a chance to buy one. So it's been about a year since i found out what they are and I want one real bad. I'm gonna have to take a trip to the u.s. if I really want to get one.

p.s. I had big plans for my s10, but I would rather save it and spend the money on a Typhoon.
