I always wondered why my typhoon acted a little different. For example, the rear hatch control on teh dash never worked, the pass. door controls on teh drivers door never worked, and all the weird wires as I would periodically look behind the stereo. The really odd ones were near the kick panel on teh drivers side. I noticed wires everywhere down there.
Well, when I removed the carpet, more wires! Wires everywhere. RCA's, grounds, speaker wire, fuses, random wires.
So, after Aeroking helped me remove the horrible alarm system, We started to trace wires.
TO anyone who has no clue how to wire, please DO NOT TRY IT ON A NICE VEHICLE.
What I found were, random LIVE wires with out any caps or taped, random splices, and piggybacking of wires, and the best was near the drivers kick panel. A section of wires were piggy backed to SPEAKER WIRE, but not attached to the other end! This was with 2 different wires, Now I know why things didn't work.
I should have known that things would have been this way when at least 3/4 of the stack of receipts were from repairs done at pepboys.
Well just had to rant after spending 10 hours doing wiring, and still not done....

Yep, #1 reason why some won't touch a modified vehicle with a ten foot pole. Fortunately, I haven't found too many electrical "surprises" in my truck. However, I haven't been so lucky with my other cars . This is how the receiver was installed by the previous owner in my current daily driver:

I get to redo BS like this on a regular basis. I especially like it when it is done for friends or family at no cost, who PAID someone to do the work.

I'm just going to add this: If electricity and electrical things aren't your style... avoid home wiring as well... I've found junction boxes behind drywall or in ceilings, I've found wires connected done with electrical tape (not wire nuts). My recent favorite: my brother in law was doing some work at his girlfriends house and found a couple of outlets that the sockets were melted. No idea how the hell that happened.

I hate jankey wiring. I don't worry too much about how hacked-up a potential purchase is, because I can fix anything GM electrical. It's not a problem for me. It takes time, but not much money, and in most cases I don't even have to get out the books. I know all the colors and circuits from memory. . I do however find jankey installations that cause problems for me while servicing unrelated issues a PITA.

I have a home-brew anti-theft system installed in some of my vehicles. They are fairly sophisticated, proving to be very reliable, and are totally undetectable by causally looking up under the dash on the driver's side, where most alarm system modules and wiring is located by installers.

I've kept fairly good notes and sketches of the systems, so that I or a subsequent owner can go back and figure out what I did to install them. And trouble-shoot any malfunctions. This is key to modifying electrical systems. Do a good job, using proven techniques, and keep notes of what you did so you can troubleshoot problems down the line.

I hate jankey wiring.

Yeah, I will add my gripe too. My Ty that was supposedly "unmolested" turned out to have some half-ass stereo install and a bunch of wiring stuck up under the dash, some of which is cut and just hanging there looking at me like a retard with a Popsicle. I know I will have to go through it someday but damn I am not looking forward to that.

Mine was also "unmolested", yet it had a remote starter/security system on it. Luckily enough I've worked on enough S-trucks to know where everything was and what it did. The first thing I did was remove a bees nest of wiring and ordered a stock keyless entry remove off ebay.

If I see an aftermarket radio in a car/truck I won't even consider purchasing it for this reason alone.

Glad to see I am not the only one with a dash full of wires from a butchered stereo job, and a a footwell full of wires and relays from some elaborate alarm system. I probably went through 2 starters and a battery before I realized the truck had an alarm with starter kill that was self arming half the time.Previous owner just unhooked the siren.

I have same issue with aftermarket alarm (non-functioning).
Went to pull a fuse to check my rear de-fog,and I couldn't access the fuse box.
Module and a rats nest of wires in the way.
Thought I might take it out myself and then realized how nasty it could be.
Local guy does all the installs for law -enforcement lights/computers etc.
I am going to have him remove that sucker and restore wiring to original.:roll:
Another so-called original unmolested 50k truck.

Mine at one time was a theft recovery. The body was well aged, but the interior was like new when I got it. The dealer had used whatever butt connectors that were laying around to re-attach all the switches and gauges. I ended up swapping the entire body harness from a 92 Jimmy to fix the gremlins. You would think if you had a two pin connector with a brown and orange wire, you would attach orange to orange and brown to brown. According to the scholar that did the install, you would be wrong. These idiots were not too bright with vacuum hoses for the AC either. Considering I spend at least 30 hours a week wiring cars, you think I would be used to this. Not a month goes by when something new pops up I have never seen.

Nice, should make your ty a *little* quicker now . Might as well throw up my "after" shots too:

Like any good hack, they cut the factory plug out so I had to go junkyarding to get another one. Trying to strip, solder and heat shrink those wires inside the dash was fun :tdown:. If I see wiring like this and the owner claims it, I have NO desire to do anything on their vehicle. Who knows what other butchery they have done :roll:.

Yep, my experience with hacked up wiring goes beyond automotive. Household stuff is in a different league due to the danger factor. Wired up a new pressure switch for the mother-in-law recently in her house. There was a disconnect switch on the wall for the well pump. However, it was connected to the neutral wire so, flipping it didn't do much...

Whenever I have to remove my stock radio, it is very difficult, because the wires are so short. I am always afraid I will break a wire or plug on the back of the radio. Are there any plug and play extensions for the stock wiring to the radio?

IMHO the reason for all these problems is that real honest-to-goodness correct wiring projects are, usually, difficult and often time consuming. Just look at our wiring diagram in the manual. Ya think GM would run all that wire if it didn't have to? When I removed my alarm, which appeared to be professionally installed, I still found one key inline splice that was crimped on the insulation. The alarm worked but who knows how good that connection was? You guys with the the above issues have my condolences...
