I can't find P6449S starter around here. I think I bought the wrong one.

I just bought a 6449S from Kragen thats the only starter for a 96 454 with the numbers 6449S NOT P6449S. I haven't Installed it because I don't think it's the right one!? P6449S is on their website but their computer can't find it. Looking at their website when I came back shows they are not the same links between 6449S and P6449S! Am I right that I have the wrong one? What other part number does it go by? Local shops to me are Kragen, Autozone, NAPA, and Pep Girls.

TIA

Not sure about that number, to be honest. The number I just found looking for it is SR8552N

I think it's the same starter as the one I have (which is for a 1998 Bravada)

I just returned the one I bought. 1) it was made in Mexico and looked like it was made in Mexico. 2) It only had a 3 year warrenty vs. a Lifetime with the one on the internet. The guy at Kragen said the P6449S is only available online. I Honestly don't want to order it online just in case I have a problem with it.

WOW BOSCH!! THANK GOD!! I've seen so many generic starters today it makes me sick!! Where did you get it? Have any problems with it? I think Autozone has Bosch stuff.

I got it from a Pep Boys if I am not mistaken... I had to try 3 different stores to find it. You ought to be able to call them and reference that number on the starter (96210) as that is how they found it when I was there (I made them pull about 9 different starters before they found the right one  ).

I have had no problems with it, always fires right up without complaint. Even in really cold weather too ... tried it out in a cold snap... 10 degrees

I have been selling some of those starters, the ones I sell are just 6449. Mine are an off brand I do not actually know where they are made all I know is I have not had one problem with them yet and have been using them for a long time. Also as far as bosch parts other than relays

I have literally had a bosch starter start a car 3 times. We made a joke at the shop how long it would last I said 2. It started in shop, turned off washed hands, started and pulled out of shop. Cust picked car up and started, went to gas station 1/2 mile away and it wouldn't start.
At my business I will never use one that was at a place I worked that used bosch.

Good luck with the search, I don't know why you can't find one just say you have a bravada or something pretty much everyone has those starters in stock.

Yea the shops around here are crap. Nobody has Bosch Starters around me, just Bosch fuel pumps, oil filters, etc. I settled for a Duralast from Autozone for @$127 bucks. It has a lifetime warranty as if that matters. I hope its not a POS but ya never know. All the regular shops sell remanufactured stuff. I compared two exact Duralast starters for a 98 Bravada and they had way different housings but same bolt pattern etc. Obviously both will work but I chose the one that said "Delco" in front of the solenoid. I'll post a pic tomorrow.
Just for future reference whats the highest quality new starter you've seen for a Ty? I've seen a company in a mag. that is making a single piece small housing unit but I can't remember the name. Summit is making a similar unit.

That Bosch starter SR8552N (N=NEW,X=REMAN) is $259.00 new with no core from NAPA. Pretty pricey but thats NAPA for you. The CVR starter everyone seems to like is only 139.99 + 14.50 shipping on EBAY.

IIRC I only paid $156 for it, and I refused to buy rebuilt.

I did just buy a used OCA mini starter for my GT, very happy with that considering I paid $60 shipped

If it fails once I'll exchange it and put the new one in a box then go hunt down a new Bosch unit.

Is the one you got much smaller? It looks way to big to be a gear reduction but it may be just the pic.
I am also wondering why the # on the side is wrong.
Good Luck

The starter is smaller and does weigh less. If its gear reduction I don't know. It sounds much different than the stocker and was way easier to get in so I assume it would be easy to get out to. Also it keeps cranking strong where the stocker would -I guess- sap all the juice out of the battery after 4-5 cranks. I seem to have a fuel pump issue so this was sort of a waste of time and money again. Oh well. Post another thread time.
