I was woundering, after seeing the awd 33 coupe that troy made, where if at all can I get the nessicary parts to convert a car to awd. I have an 81 camaro and was thinking about converting it to awd. I don't think a talon's setup would work as easy as a syty's setup. Could anyone tell me where I could find the parts needed to make a car awd. I'm sry for my noobishness of this vehicle I just don't know anything when it comes to sytys. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Leave the SyTys alone for those who need the parts for their own trucks, and go salvage a Safari AWD drivetrain. It uses a very similar xfer case as ours, plus you probably wont spent near as much due to the parts wont be labeled as SyTy.

I agree with SYO237 although I thought the Safari AWD xfer case was the same as ours except for output shafts.

Ive heard that the gearing wasnt exactly the same, though I cant find the specifics on this. Someone please tell me otherwise and show me info if this is in/correct :? .

The more common vehicle to get all the drivetrain parts you'll need is an Olsmobile Bravada. You also better be a hellofa fabricator.

the problem I see is, how are you gonna fit a transfercase between the floorboards and the ground?

Pfft, transfer case tunnel dude. Hack out the floor, and get some 18 gauge sheet metal.

Id kinda be like way back when you rode the bus to school and you got the seat over the rear wheels and had to deal with the wheel well under your feet. Youd be sitting with your knees up your nose.

Here's the thread about the AWD Merkur XR4Ti. Might give you some ideas.

Nah, wasnt trying to be mean at all. I was serious when I said scavange an AWD drivetrain from a Safari or like Jimmy said, a Bravada.

It was late, been working on the Sy, was feeling loopy on the rest of the posts though. Nothing personal gMachine :)

Seriously, here's the parts you should be looking to score.

Transmission & transfercase from a '91 to '96 Olds Bravada. Plan on upgrading the trans if you've got any serious power, but the transfer case should be good to go. Tcase is the same as the ones in the Sy / Ty / and Astro / Safari. Various models & model years had slight differences (front flange diameter, rear spline count, vans use a different chain configuration for less noise, etc.)

Front axle assembly from any year Bravada. Later model years have a drain plug, so they'd be more desirable, but any year would work. Pickup all the parts, including axle shafts and spindles.

The fun part will be making all that stuff fit, including a front propshaft, integrating the two suspensions together, brake systems, making the front axle clear the engine, floorpan modifications, etc. This is not an easy project. Prepare to spend ALOT of time, money, and effort doing this (if you're serious).

i think it would be a cool concept but short of building a tube chassis to accomidate the runnign gear i think it's a long term burnt out give up and put it in the corner of the garage project...

Re: I have some ideas, could use your guys help...

i would say your better off getting a wreaked SyTy. and just use what you need. then you won't have to go back to the junk yard again and again...and use the 4.3 turbo and upgrade that.

not saying you have a bad idea, cause i think that would be cool to have an AWD F body, but you'll prolly get bashed from the F-body ppl and RWD muscle heads, and from stripping a SyTy..but i say go for it. LOL piss them off while looking at your tail lights..

Re: I have some ideas, could use your guys help...

I just picked up a transfer case (typhoon), front diff, and rear end (empty) this past weekend....

the xfer case needs a new chain, and the diff a new front seal, but its all for sale :)
