IC pump

While doing some logging last week I noticed that my IC pump has stopped working. My relay is fine, fuse behind the alt is also good. I have not yet removed the pump, but I am pretty sure that's where the problem will be. So I started reading old posts about Johnson, Sureflow and others, and searched the net for a good price. What I found is that those are all expensive, usually around $100 or more, and they dont have very much flow or pressure. I happened to go to Harbor Freight the pther day and found this-
09576.gif

Compact self-priming pump is ideal for clearing bilges and other marine applications. Not for use with fuel or flammable liquids. Includes mounting bracket.
240 gallons per hour, 23 ft. total lift
Stainless steel pump housing
Dual threaded inlet: 3/8''-18NPT female and 3/4''male
12V DC, 65Watt, Amps: 7.5 start, 5 continuous; 10 PSI max; Impeller driven; Overall dimensions: 5-3/4''L x 2-1/2'' diameter; Weight:3.7lbs.

For $25. They had two in stock. I passed on it, looking to research the topic further. When I decided to buy the pump they were out, and I was given a raincheck. I am still waiting for more to come in.

While waiting, I was thinking about my old fuel pump. I replaced it with a Walbro 255, but it still worked fine. It has some debris in the inlet screen, but was fully operational. I was wondering if anyone has tried to run a fuel pump for an IC pump. I dont have the fuel pump in front of me, but *I think* the inlet could be tapped for a fitting to adapt a hose. This pump should have PLENTY of flow, even with its small 5/16 or 3/8 size. Has anyone tried this??

Has anyone tried a water pump like the Harbor Freight pump pictured??

Re: IC pump

I'm using a marine bilge pump in my Ty. Works great. Tends to foam up the coolant a bit because of the volume. But I don't open the IC cap while the IC pump is running any more.

Mounted mine on the inter finder above the steering box and beside the power steering pump.

Good luck

Re: IC pump

Saw that one in the catalog too, but I already changed mine, so no need to change again. I used the Atwood RV pump I got at Walmart for like $18.00, plus it has a 3 year warranty if thats at all important and with some very minor mods it went into the stock location no problem. Works very well...

Re: IC pump

Here are the specs for the Johnson:

6.9 gal/min @ 0.10 bar (2.2 amps)
5.2 gal/min @ 0.20 bar (2.0 amps)
2.4 gal/min @ 0.30 bar (1.7 amps)

The pump you list is rated at 4.0 gal/min @ ?? psi. Pulls a good bit more amperage, but should be fine. Not too heavy either.

Doesn't seem bad for the price.

Re: IC pump

I got the pump today. I tested it against my old fuel pump, and it blew the fuel pump away. I only had a 1/4 hose to run through too. It emptied a quart container in about 3 or 4 seconds vs the fuel pump taking 10 or so seconds. I cant wait to get it in the Ty.

Re: IC pump

I took out my stock IC pump last night. It was kinda odd, that when I jumped the wires with 12v, the pump hummed, but when attached to its harness it didnt do anything. I checked the harness and it had 12v, and the ground was good to. The pump was stuck, humming, but didnt blow a fuse. I took the pump apart and there was nothing locking it up. I started turning the motor, and it freed up. It seemed that the blockage was between the pump and the motor, but I couldnt get the impeller off to see in there. I lubed it with some WD-40 and it started working like new. Its still going to be replaced, but at least it works again.

I tested it against my new pump too. It wasnt as fast as the new pump, and it definately didnt self prime like the new pump does. The stock pump doesnt really make any pressure either, not like the Harbor Freight pump does.

Best of all, when I went to Harbor Freight I brought a coupon for 15% off that I just got in the mail, so my $24.99 pump got even cheaper. I bought a 1 year free replacement warranty for an extra $5.99 and I still came in under $30. I started to mount it up, and I can fit it near where the stocker was, and even use the stock hoses and wiring with no probem. I willl try to get some pictures when I mount it all up for good.

Re: IC pump

Interesting pumps on those links. Ive never seen one like #4 before. I have #2, and just put it in. Here are some pictures;

In the top pic you can see how it compares to the stock pump. The bracket I made is just a piece of steel I had laying around. I drilled a few holes in it for air to pass through. It sits about 5/8" off the core.It fits just fine when I put the assembly back into the truck. I put a weatherpack connector on it so it plugs right in. As for noise, its a little loud. I havent got all the air out of the system yet, but I can hear it over my engine idling. People who dont know what it is might think I have a belt going bad, its that kind of noise. If I dont get used to it I may remount it to rubber instead. Right now it has very small rubber feet between it and the steel bracket.

As for flow; with the stock pump running you can remove the cap on the upper IC and check for flow, looking for movement or bubbles. With this pump, the fluid COMES OUT OF THE UPPER IC when the cap is off!!!

Since its loud, I decided to alter the chip to change the IC pump operation and disable my hotwire job. I changed my turn on to an engine temp of 165 F. I couldnt get my IAT's to turn the pump on/off. I am going to have to dig a little deeper for that, and maybe post in the tuning forum.

More to come.....
