No ac, I guess i'll have to find a volvo fan. Anyone know where? I have a chance to pickup a taurus fan but i have not been able to find much info on it. I have heard its also a good fan but no supporting evidence so far.

You can find the volvo fans on ebay from time to time but since everyone's using them now they are getting really hard to find and getting expensive.. here's one, I got mine for $50 two years ago and now you can see how much there going for http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RADI...ryZ33600QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

There have been many people using the taurus fan do a search I believe it's close to 2800cfm where as the volvo fan is 3000cfm. Another option which was posted above is the MKVIII fan.. it's kinda big so you'll have to cut it down alittle bit but it flows 5000cfm and plenty of high hp cars run them

You know I havent read the entire thread so forgive me if its already been answered but what are you getting your temps from? My temps on the Autometer will say anywhere from 180-220* but my CTS is almost never above 170*.

interesting reading this thread.

Since having a few sealing problems and a few other gremlins getting n the way of my playtime this year i thought i would take the extra time to do some testing before going back to the track.

using

ford taurus fan

no thermostat

electric water pump 55gpm rating

using straight water no additives

3 or 4 inch front mount intercooler (this is important in this test from what i read in the above thread)

wiring and relays were 2 years old

wiring was 10 gauge and relays were 40 amp rated from directed electronics. (realy was getting hot.

I recall this fan being rated at 40 amps from posts on this bbs. ( think its higher !)

large male & female spade connectors between relay and fan to enable disconnect plugin to r&r radiator. these got hot when running!

starting from ambient 70-80 degrees

took 18 minutes to go from ambient to 185

the changes:

changed relay to 200 amp relay -solenoid

power input to new relay, 2 gauge from 12 v+ junction block i allready had in use. (thats a big wire)

output from new big 200 amp relay to fan same 10 gauge size but now without spade terminals. all connections are now bolted at relay.

the old 40 amp relay would get warm and the old spade connections would get hot also.

power to 75 amp water pump relay used to be 10 gauge abut now the 2 gauge connection on the relay solenoid now provides constant 12v+ to 86 and 87 on water pump relay. output to water pump relay is on 30. relay switches ground on 85.

the test w/ wiring changes using existing ford taurus fan.

now took 36 minutes to go from ambient to 185 degrees.

Guess this just doubled the effiency of the cooling system.

btw it now takes about 10 minutes to reach 160 and about 2 degrees per minute increase after that.

so anyway went from ambeint to 185 degrees in 18 minutes to

185 degrees in 36 minutes.

both tests was idleing at 1300 rpm.

So after getting really anal aabout getting some baseline numbers on my cooling situation I think anyone reading this can take his cooling problem and kick in in the ass now and go out and idle in traffic w/ or without air using an electric fan if they do it right!

fwiw i was going to see if the temp would go higher than 185 degrees but I figured after 36 minutes i had beaten the problem and the solution was at hand.

besides i wanted to inspect the oil filter before i went home. ( it was clean) as this made exaclty 1 hour total time on new bearings. ( remember i said i had a sealing problem above :) )

Guess i should add that the test above had the motor running prior to setting timing which can affect temps. Hey i just turned the distributor enough to get it to fire and kept on with what i was doing. Didn't care how it ran so long as it did.

time to check the atco schedule. :)

I forgot to add that it then took 8 minutes to go from 185 degrees to 108 degrees and left the main battery at 8.02 volts.

temps could have gone even lower but i was done checking the oil fiter and was time to go home.

so how do you then restart the truck for another pass?

2nd battery is odyessey street rod size switching thru a painless wiring dual baterry solenoid setup. 2nd battery is isolated from main unless the ignition key is on.

what did he say?

:)

How did that work? the serpintine belt has 6 grooves i think, any wider it would be hanging off the pulley's wouldnt it?

The Tensioner that I had only had a 4 rib pulley on it. I had to change it over to a 6 rib pulley. With this setup the only acc drive that was being driven was the Alt and Water pump.

Bolted? How is that? I am curious to see this set up, know where you got the relay, what kind, blah blah blah.

I have a Volvo, Ford taurus and flex-a-lite slim twin 210/220 fans, the volvo sucks the most air and its what I am using now. ( I remember Ed said to get a taurus fan )

The problem I had with the volvo was it would stall the truck when it kick on if I am stpped. Now that I am runing bs3 its not a problem because I can set the idle rpm higher.
you also need a 40amp or higher fuse and relay , I have 2 30amp relay.

I am back with no AC and a 4" fmic, not over heating problem with the volvo fan.

The thing with the heater core plumb into the water pump, this is true for me. I would run about 10* hotter when it plumb to the water pump. Cooler when it heater core go back to the radiator.

using stinger sr200 relay,

no heat like i saw in smaller relays.

ok so a 200 amp relay is overkill, but it makes this fan scream compared to the smaller relays.

was testing new relay and the phone rang. 1st time ever i had hearing the caller because of the fan being on. there was that much difference.
