Check around. There's been several for sale already in CA so it would save you all the hassle. If you really need to import one, there's several CA members who have done it and can fill you in on what you need to know.

No problems at at. The riv changed alot of rules, now you can bring into Canada a vw-r32 or what ever you want to. That's why you see all the Japanese cars now, that 5 years ago wouldn't have a chance here. Or you can buy mine and finish putting it together.

Re: Importing a Ty

so there is no rules to bring it into canada? Thats way better then.
Is it still the same costs?
How much does it need to be "put together"?

Re: Importing a Ty

If you buy one from the states, get the title and send copies of both side of it and a copy of the bill of sale to the U.S. side 72hours before you import it. Stop at the U.S. side get your stamp on the title when you go though, move on the to Canadian side pay your GST then take it home and get an out of provice inspection. There is no RIV on vehicles 15years and older. Most likely they will make you put day time running lights in it for the out of province.

There are a bunch of SyTys for sale in Alberta, many have had recent inspections, those are always good options.

Re: Importing a Ty

I brought mine in a couple of years ago, had no problems. The title has to be at the american side of the border crossing 72 hours before you plan to cross. To bring the truck across, you have to do it during regular business hours!!!! Check with the border crossing you wish to bring the truck across, they may have a slightly different rule, (mon.-fri, or sat 'till noon) to be safe. make sure you insurance co. knows you are bringing this truck across, if you plan on driving it home!! My experiance was a temperary permit issued in the U.S.A. is valid in the provance of Ontario, but not Quebec, not sure about any other provance. Read the "customs web site", MTO's web site, and just double check the RIV's web site. You can call them too...They will help and answer any questions. You may also need a recall letter to state there aren't any recalls on the truck. You will need the V.I.N. for this. (vintage in Oshawa, or GM in the USA). They are fun trucks! Enjoy!

Re: Importing a Ty

So do you guys think it would be better to but one from canada? It might be easier because then i dont have to deal with borders and that.

Also because i am still waiting for the MTO to get off strike so i can stop being a slacker and get my full licence, and they have not even been talking about coming off strike so its hard to say when that will be. So as of right now i can not drive in the states but i could always have its shipped either way too.

Does anyone know if someone has a ty for sale in canada at a resonable price?

Re: Importing a Ty

I had mine on kijiji a few months ago for $6500.00, it needed to be finsihed putting back together. Do a search on this site for ty 0040, there's pics of it floating around on here. I'll send you some pics thurs night as I am out of town for work. They all come form the states, just find out where they came from, some of the east coast ones can get rusty. Mines from Cali, so no rust on it.The ones listed in the above post are alright, I'd probably lok at the green one, and make sure the mileage is correct, seems kinda low. Ask questions as much as possible, alot of guys on this forumn are very willing to help and give both good and bad answers/info to help you out.

Re: Importing a Ty

I know most of the trucks around the edmonton or for that matter alberta, BC and Sask area. Most of the ones for sale I have either owned at one point or done some work to them, if you need some info on a specific one PM me a link to the ad and I will tell you what I know.

Now shameless plug time,

I will be selling my Garnet 93, just no room to store it anymore. It was an Arizona truck most of its life, the only snow it has seen was when I backed it out of the garage last year to take a few pics in the light.

Just had a fresh coat of paint and it was done properly, all the glass came out, etc.

Let me know if your interested and I can give you some details.

Well i just got a e-mail back from the guy with the guy with the green/ grey ty. He says its still for sale and that the mileage is correct. I asked for some more pics and ask about rust, what he has done to the truck. Are there any other questions i should ask as well?

Re: Importing a Ty

Where the truck is from, get the vin so you can post it up here and get a carfax, and see if anybody knows about the truck.Ask him if he's a member on this site( not that important in buying it)pics of the underneath, the bottums of doors, the tail gate, pics are the most important. If you are really serious about buying it, hop on a plane and personally see it. I wouldn't spend over 5k on anything without having somebody you know/trust look at it .

Re: Importing a Ty

Well he has not answered my last few messages so i am not sure where the guy with that ty went to. But it is looking like importing a car from the states might be cheaper but it sounds like its alot of hoops to jump threw and alot of headaches. So i am still looking at both, just kinda got to see what turns up i guess

Re: Importing a Ty

Toadie, where are you in Ontario? It is not bad at all to get one brought into Canada, we bring vehicles in all the time. Best border crossing to use is Sarnia, as they are open all day every day, and it's the simplest bridge to cross, so don't let bringing one in from the U.S. scar you. As for anything else, like everyone has said, ask lots of questions, do your research, and have extra money ready to spend on this truck. You will love it, but it will be a pain in your ass at the same time. And let us know when you end up getting one.

Re: Importing a Ty

Haha, i have been looking on and off for a long time and now i have some money saved up for one. Right now i am thinking some where around $6,000 would be good to get into and then still leaves me some money for parts as well (i am in college for automotive right now). I dont need one so i am just going to keep on learning, reading, coming here and looking around for a truck ty or even a sy.

I am from London. Sarnia is the best eh? Yeah right now i am really just open to everything, like i said before the trucks that are in canada seem to be more then from the states. So i am just going to play the waiting game and see if something will come around for me. Never know what will happen (might be a long time before i get one, or it might be tomorrow. just never really know)

Re: Importing a Ty

Yeah the Canadian trucks are a bit more, but things to keep in mind: First is the dollar, not bad right now but makes a difference. Second, a truck already imported has already gone through all the crap (daytime running lights, inspection, etc.), which isn't a big deal, but just another thing you don't have to do. Third is the taxes paid, although you have to pay them when you transfer it anyways. Fourth, the air tax is already paid, was around $100, probably a little more now. But the only thing to watch for is the condition of the truck, it's always best to look at it in person, but it isn't always possible. Do your research and just don't buy any truck you can get your hands on right away, cause that will only come back to haunt you. Whatever you decide to buy, you will love it:)

Re: Importing a Ty

I will more then likley just buy one from Canada, they are here for sale and would be less of a hassle. If they werent on the market, then doing the states thing would be a good time if you went with a buddy or somthing. Do you have a preferance on the year?

Re: Importing a Ty

Well i have not seen many for sale in ontario really. The only place i really have seen them is west. So it would be like a 3000+km drive to get it back here. So i am starting to wonder what would really be easier. Yeah, i was going to go with one of my good buddies and "we" (bull sh*t like i would let someone else drive my truck), i think it would be a really good time and alot of fun.

I am not picky, colour, year sy or ty. Just want something that i can drive and not have to worry really (decent body, decent motor, just all around decent shape)
