Intercooler pump fuse keeps blowing...HELP!

The 10-AMP fuse was blown when I checked it....previous owner spliced the yellow wire but didn't ground it. Correctly grounded the yellow wire and put a new 10-AMP fuse in. Turned the igntion ON and the pump was working correctly. Let it run for approximately 2 minutes and it was running good still. Decided to take it for a spin (5 mins).....watching Datamaster, it got up to 155 IAT temp....decided to come back hom. Pulled the fuse and it was blown again.

Any ideas what to try next? Could the relay be bad? Is the pump shorting the fuse out?

FYI....the pump is the stock pump. Again though, it runs good when and circulates efficiently when the ignition is ON. Took it for a spin, and it blew the fuse. Ideas?

Ya, it's got a Turbo
Re: Intercooler pump fuse keeps blowing...HELP!

Since it doesn't blow instantly we're not dealing with a dead short. My guess, the pump is old and once it's run for a bit and heats up it's drawing too much current. Can you run the pump for 5, 10, 15 min. without running the truck? If the fuse still blows this points towards the pump, rather than a wire which may be intermittently grounding out on some metal when you drive it.
Wire a meter in series with the pump and check the current draw. This will confirm things.

I suspect the pump is going out. Weak, worn pumps will draw more current and pop the fuse after they heat up as opposed to right away. Do what Kevin suggested to verify for sure before you just throw a new pump in it.

Re: Intercooler pump fuse keeps blowing...HELP!

I suspect you guys are right....I will do the test this weekend though. Does anyone know what IAT temps should be in Datamaster with a good intercooler pump?

If the pump is the issue, I guess I should begin my research on which pump is "best".

I'm really happy with the Johnson pump. Flows good and is a (larger) direct OEM fit so installation was a breeze. :2cents:

Re: Intercooler pump fuse keeps blowing...HELP!

The when the original pump is on its last legs, it will blow the fuse. On one of my trucks I tried sticking in a bigger fuse and lasted maybe 30 secs. I am surprised the original is still working at this point, alot of them were dead 10 years ago.
