easy.. instead of the plastic plug.. splice the wires together.

if thats not an option.. then rig it.. grab some metal.. make connections.. cover it with electrical tape. :D

Yeah, melted connector. Just like I had on the Astro. It's a wonder there haven't been fires and a recall.

Parts book shows the connector to be P/N 12102740, but can't find at GM site.

Junk yard is the best bet.

Trying to find it at Autozone or O'reilly, but having trouble with my internet connection. Back in a few.....

Ok, the wiring harness I can rob from a junk yard. WHat about the modual that it was connected to? I tried reconnect the harness back to that modual with no luck. Granted there are 3 wires in the harness and 4 places to connect it to on the modual.
Any thoughts?

That 'module' is the blower switch. It is attached to the back of the control assembly by a the little hex-head screws in the photo. I thought you already bought one (?)

I called my local GM delaer. They don't make a replacement connector assembly, but you can buy the plastic piece (p/n 12004067) and 4 terminals (p/n 8905087) and build your own. Junk yard will be faster. Just make sure you solder the junkyard connector into your harness. No crimp-on connectors!

There are 4 terminals in the connector (tan, orange, light blue, brown/white wires). If you only see 3, then the 4th melted out and is dangling back there somewhere.

Ok maybe we're talking about the wrong thing or I replaced the wrong thing.

In the first picture is what I thought was the blower control module/switch. I have my finger on it. Thats what I replaced.

Or is this what I was supposed to replace? This is on the side of the panel and looks to control AC/HEAT/VENT/DEFROST.ect settings. The device that slides up and down.

This is what is all burned up.

Oops, sorry! I misinterpreted the pics. Looks like that switch is not available separate from the rest of the assembly. I could be wrong. Best to call a dealer parts desk to find out for sure. I see that website I posted has the assembly for $120. Probably best to get a junkyard part. I'll keep looking around.

good news. Autozone seems to have the switch.
WELLS BLOWER/HEATER SWITCH for a 1992 GMC TRUCK S15 JIMMY 4WD

Unit Price: $12.99
Core Value*: $0.00
Part No.: SW3021

You're still needing to get a connector at a junkyard, though....

I did some surfing on this subject. Seems GM is not the only manufacturer with this problem. The 'experts' all seem to agree that this problem starts when the brushes in the blower motor wear, and blower motor current draw goes up dramatically. Then the contacts in switches and connectors overheat and melt.

So, you might want to consider replacing the blower motor, or at least measure the current... probably need one of those inductive ammeters (clamp-on type).

I guess I knew what I was doing all along, replacing my blower motor before discovering the burned switch. Yeah, that's what I was thinking all along....

Nightmare, when your fan would work periodically, would it work on all 5 settings (low, low/med, med, high/med, high)? And could you direct the airflow IE: floor, defrost, etc?

Ok, update.

The Wells part SW3021 finally came in. I'm gonna attempt to get this shitbox running again in the morning.

Thanks for all your help!

Yep, it would work normally.

Good news. And, not to nag or anything, but remember that the new parts may melt soon if the blower motor is drawing excessive current, as my web-search results implied.

No worries, I got a new blower motor on the way. While I was at the junk yard I "took" a few harness' I needed. So now I have a few spares incase it happens again :fadein:
