is it the starter?

well, it happens about 10% of the times i start up the ty. when i crank the key, it'll just "Click" and then nothing. takes a few times. then it'll crank up, but w/ a struggle. so, does this mean it is the starter going bad?

much thanks...

No, you need to get a "Hot Shot" starter relay kit. Mine did the same thing until I installed the HotShot. Haven't had a problem since. I think i got mine from Jeg's for about $30. Make sure you use some Thermo-Tec around the starter wires to prevent them from melting due to heat from the exhaust manifold.

ok, well now the ty wont start at all. all i get is a click. i checked the service manual. how do i know that i don't need to replace the starter?

anyhow, i see the purple wire. i'll try to replace that first. but it looks like a PITA to get to. is there any easy way to replace the wire?

also, what does the hot shot relay do?

much thanks!

btw, when i look at the wiring diagram for the electrical schematics... i see blk and ppl wire going out of the starter solenoid. blk goes to batt. but ppl, does it change color to yellow and then goto ignition switch? do i just have to change the purple part, and where does it change to yellow?

much thanks, MikeC

Mike,

The HotShot (Part #30202) is a starter solonoid amperage booster which helps overcome starting problems from an overheated starter or worn out wiring system (very common on our trucks). Again, you should be able to find this part at http://jegs.com or http://summitracing.com. You don't need the "HotShot Plus" in case you're wondering. It's not an easy job to do by any means. You'll have to remove the passenger side wheel and rubber flap in the fender well. Then you have to unbolt the starter so you can move it around enough to work on the wires. Good luck and may the force be with you

dang... i spent the past 2hrs reading up on this thred in syty.org... ugh... i'm now dreading this...

so you're saying that the hot shot relay helps boost the amps? is it necessary? i read in all the posts that this is only a quick fix. i hear something about a remote solenoid. i looked it up and found holly. but not really sure how this thing works.

anyhow, how do i know if i need to replace the starter itself?? i'm not sure if it's bad. but, it's pretty sure i need a new 10g purple wire. so, in order to rewire the purple wire you're saying i have to remove the starter? is it possible w/o doing that... ugh... i know i'm gonna have bad dreams tonight just thinking about it.

much thanks though...
if someone can clear it up even more... thanks...

Mike,

did mine on my sy without removing the starter..with the right tools it can be done....also I read somewhere where you dont have to connect it directly to the starter but that wire which leads up to the top ....keep checking the archives and asking around...My hot shot has worked for years now with no problems....

Mike,

Wish I was still in WA, I could help you out with this. I never used any hot shot relay or anything, but if it works, great.
There are two long bolts that go in from the bottom, loosen those and you can lower the starter enough to get to the wires.

I put a mini-starter in mine, and I never have any problems. The stock starter is a bitch to pull out, but once its out the mini is simple to put in. Some previous owner had notched the housing to get the starter out before, so that might have helped a bit. I don't know, all I remember is really fighting the thing to get it out.

Russ bland has a write up on the hot shot relay...

hey scott and other thanks for the tips...

ok, so does anyone think i should replace the starter also? or should i wait for it to crap out... i hear CVR is the brand to go?

so, can someone tell me how a remote starter works. cuz sean M. uses one and was wondering if i should go that route or the hot shot relay.

i believe my purple wire is fried. at least it is nice and brown...

much thanks! MikeC

Hey Mike,

I would go with the relay, since it has been so successful with others.

Maybe replace the wire that is burnt and see if your starter works. If so, just put the new one inside a wire loom, and secure it away from heat the best you can. Just look at the area where the wire was burnt and make sure you address that area the most.

Mike,

I installed the Hot Shot on my Ty on 7-18-98 and it is still working perfect and the Ty always starts on the first try. I also insulated the wire going to the starter and made sure it was clear from the downpipe and also used the insulation to wrap around the starter.
