Ive got an ultima in the bed on the front pass. corner with 1/0ga. pos and neg through a quick disconnect
to a starter sol. next to the batt. with 1/0ga running from the switched side of the sol. to the starter
(that way the 1/0 is only hot when cranking).connected to the always hot side of the sol. I have 2 8ga.
cables-1 going to the alt. and one to the +12v junction on the firewall behind the upper intake.
I hadn't had any trouble since the install a year or two ago. But recently here's what's been going on:
When the trucks been running for a while or has started and stopped several times recently it cranks
VERY slowly but has always started.
The voltage guage in the dash goes up and down erratically.
With a load on the charging system(headlights,trans fans,AC) the tach jumps around wonce the
engine gets over around 3k rpm.
Even with no elec. load the tach and volt ga. jump in time with the turnsignals flashing.
Batt. has 12.7vdc w/o engine running (course that was after a 15 mile drive so??)and 13.8 when idling.
DM shows good voltage.
Before I get into it does anyone have any ideas? Since it was slow to crank despite fat 1/0 ga.cable
I figured it was prolly my main ground, but it's fine.all other grounds are clean and tight.
The alt. appears to put out ok voltage, even when under a load.Could my alt. be going out in some
wierd way, or is my optima taking a crap on me-wouldn't be the first time-? Even though 2 8ga wires is
kinda small-I had it laying around-this is a new problem so I wouldn't think that's it.
Any help is appreciated.
