Is the Typhoon a reliable daily driver?

I am planning to buy a Typhoon in Sept., Oct. I have been planning and pricing for years for this purchase. I need to hear from the members about the reliability of these turbo trucks. I want to know the opinion of the experts who own these beautiful trucks. I will be driving it daily and need to know this can be done without worry, even in the snow of the Midwest. I will have an hour commute each way daily after I get married, for now anyways. Any input would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I think your gonna find that alot of people will tell you that its gonna take alot of work. For the age of the truck, depending on how many miles you buy one with. And what problems it has when you buy it.

1 hr each way...i wouldn't personally. Just buy a beater for the drive to work and the ty for the weekends. It won't cost much more.

Hi

Hi

I would not want a Ty as a daily-driver, because of the little problems that always pop-up. If you can afford it, by a Ty as a weekend toy and keep your current car for a DD. I purchased my 03' EVolution as my DD to keep the miles off my Typhoon. :D

Its all relative, my work truck is a 04' Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, that was not exactly cheap, the EVo was reasonable to me. :D

Many people will say HELL NO! I say yes seeing as there are many SyTy's with over 170k on the odometer. The number one problem is ignorance. People have dime a dozen franchise mechanics work on them and wonder why it has problems. People also build there motors themselves in there garages thinking they are professionals and then wonder why they spit the bottom end out. Don't buy a modified Ty. Don't buy a Ty that has any sign of abuse. As stated before, these trucks are getting old. They will need a decent tune up. Only let a professional touch it. Jiffy Lube isn't gonna know what they are working on. Be cautious and you shouldn't have any serious problems. Do a very very thorough tune up. I can't stress that enough. Catching a problem early prevents bigger future problems. Wait for the right one to. Run diagnostic tests, compression check it, check the timing, replace the ignition, change every last fluid in it, and so on. Be smart and you should be fine with a daily driver.

i commuted to work 1.5 hours each way for 4 months.

i own a sy, ty and a pontiac. i hate the pontiac with a passion, i dont care how good gas mileage it gets, how good the stereo sounds over the trucks or how smooth it rides, how cold the AC blows, i hate the car.

the best drives to work where in the pontiac.

the far worst drives where in the typhoon.

the syclone did it one time on a fresh transmission to break it in...i have a 3" dump under the cab for exhaust. i love my syclone. for that occasion however, that was a horrible drive, worse than the ty....but then again i made my sy a 1/4 truck, not a cross country caddy.

not to mention that the gas average now for 93 is at least $2/gallon. typhoons arent famous for good mpg.

but...its your money and you want a truck. just start saving now for a maintenance fund as well....

Thanks for the input everyone. I do not want to do the beater thing any longer. I would love to hear from more Ty owners who used these for commuting. I will only need a year os so until I can retire it to the garage for weekend use.

I drove my Ty last year to school (Sept-Dec,Feb-May) 50 miles each way 3 times a week and never had any problems except during the last month my heatercore decided to die.

just the way of driving that is causing the problems!
it can be done, just don't get on the boost, and don't race all the time, don't mod it, just save yourselve the bucks in the beginning and buy/make a better engine.

I use my Ty as a DD. 90K. It does suck. But mainly on gas. Averages about 17mpg. And fix in about $2.15 a gallon. That means $38.00 fillups. Most I've gotten is 305 miles out of a tank. So do your calculations. Just a note....I drive my truck like a granny would. I'd say I see boost about every 3rd time I drive it. And its stock.
Despite how I drive it. Things still go up. In the past year alone I've replaced; O2 sensor, heater core, water pump, lower rad hose, upper rad hose, stat, radiator, and ABS unit took a dump. Luckily, I'm a mechanic and I can fix sh$t cheap. Oh, and lets not forget the most recent A/C venture. Lets just say without the help of my fellow Sy/Ty'er, and having some mechanical skill, I would have never sorted out that problem. A/C is nice and cold again:D
My truck was mint when I bought it and over the past 40,000 miles I've watched, and listened, to my Sweet, Tight, And Right Ty turn into a rattle trap. I'm constantly chasing noises and creaks.

My advice to you...If you're handy with a wrench, buy one that's not so perfect. Meaning, a nice high mileage STOCK example. Don't buy someone else's problem.
My advice to you if you're not handy with a wrench...buy a Honda.

yep, I had to listen to everything shake rattle and roll in my interior the first two months or so I used my Ty as a DD. that made for a long 120/miles/day!
:x
I finally got them all fixed (mostly loose screws and dumb Sh!t like that).

Like stated above, if you can't turn a wrench, or at least afford to pay someone who can, don't get a syty.

I've been using my Ty for a DD for two years now and have not had a single problem aside from two flat tires. First one was simply from the ORIGINAL 10 year old tires finally wearing out. Second flat was from a 1" nail + bracket of some sort I ran over.

I've lost the heater core (the DAY that I bought it :( ) and had to do the ball joints and the CV joint, but for a 10 year old truck that is not bad - IMO.

I have 28k miles on my truck now, and don't anticipate any major problems. Then again, I don't drive my truck hard and it is 100% stock. :)
