Johnson intercooler pump install -- Is this correct routing?

Installed a new Johnson IC pump and routed some fresh 3/4" heater hose. Is this correct install?

Or are these backwards?

Thanks!

I have always done mine as top-top and bottom-bottom.

diagram is backwards. you want to fill the upper intercooler from the bottom. Makes the water cycle through the IC better and allows air bubbles to escape. The diagram would make it tougher to purge the system of air.

Mike and I have different views on this one... I fill my upper IC through the top fitting ... seems like there is always a small bit of air in the upper IC (Hard for it to be filled to the top). Drawing from the bottom keeps the air from getting down to the pump. If you happen to get a little low on fluid you'll always have a supply to the pump - if you fill from the bottom it's possible for the IC upper port to become uncovered and start sucking air.

Either way probably works just fine - personal preference

reviving an old thread......and adding to it.

Redoing the intercooler setup on the Syclone, and have some questions and comments.

First, is regarding the the orientation of the hoses. What was the factory set up? I believe that the pump (that is fed from the bottom of the lower intercooler) routed to the top of the upper. Neither the Sy or Ty have the stock metal lines, and did not see the routing in the shop manuals. I see that some people are feeding the upper intercooler from the bottom, which seems like its "harder" on the pump, as you are using pump pressure and trying to fight gravity. Perhaps you get more flow if the pump feeds the top of the upper since you are not fighting the fluid?

With that, the diagram in the first post would be "correct".

A few more questions........

has anyone ever datalogged intake air temperatures with any of the following modifications:
- adding water wetter
- intercooler aluminum scoop
- stock vs johnson pump
- turbo heat shield or upper intercooler heat wrap

I feed the upper IC via the top port... two reasons - first is that it eliminates the possibility of the pump sucking in air if the fluid gets low. Second reason is that it provides additional 'head' to the pump, allowing the pump to work easier.

I have data logs from my completely stock system when I first bought the Sy. Temps always got up to 125, or so.

I have the DutchTy charge air cooler, blade of death scoop, factory GM Cobalt recirc pump, turbo blanket, crossover and downpipe wrapped, true cold air intake. Intake temps now stay below 95 and in cooler weather will follow ambient temps. I use distilled water and water wetter.

I know it sounds weird. ...but no Homo intended here....put your mouth around the upper intercooler hole and blow to help purge air out of the hoses....works for me everytime. Hehe

This is how I eventually did mine. I initially did it the other way and the pump would suck air.
